“Slightly disappointing!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 May 2013

This is the 2nd time that we have stayed at the Du Vin Bistro in Harrogate hence returning. The lady on reception was absoluteIy fantastic! (I am so sorry but I can not remember her name - very friendly). Basically my husband, upon provisionally checking in didnt realise that he had put our brand new car keys on the reception desk and to cut a long story short, when we walked the 10 minute walk to our car, he suddenly came over with a hot sweat!!! We contacted Audi to ask for help and then went to the nearest bar to wait for them. Because we had booked the car parking via the hotel, my husband went to reception to advise them that we will be parking our car....when we have sorted the key issue out!!! The fantastic lady on reception came back to the reception and found a set of keys and remembering what my husband had said, realised who's keys they were and proceeded to ring us - what a life saver and very much appreciated!! We then went to check into our room and it was slightly disappointing! The room was looking very tired, the wallpaper was lifting in not just one place but quite a few. The bathroom had quite a lot of mould on the walls. The coffee machine had no instructions and took us forever to work out how to use it. We then went to the bar for a drink and yes the prices were very expensive - which we did expect for the hotel but what was shocking was the staff.....so miserable and I think that they do not know how to smile!! Whats more, when you order a drink - it is courteous to put a 'coaster' on the bar before serving the drink - they didn't. We had also booked for breakfast - again, we were greeted by a very miserable lady who then showed us to our table. We choose the full cooked breakfast and we were very disappointed! For the price that you pay to be served 1 sausage (very processed and not fresh) 2 rashers of bacon, half of a grilled tomato, 1 mushroom and an egg of your choice - terrible!!! We were not even offered beans. There was also a selection from the continental buffet but we were still not impressed. We then went to check out which was was very quick and efficient - again it was the very friendly lady on the reception who remembered our keys. We then walked to our car to find out the 2 cars had blocked us in - we then had to go back to reception to ask who's cars they were to get them to move them - this is again very strange and why do they allow this?? All in all it was a very mediocre stay (apart from the service on reception - which was outstanding). The hotel really does need a facelift in the rooms and they seriously need to re-train their staff - a smile cost's nothing.

Room Tip: Rooms in the basement can be very noisy

this was our first time in a Hotel Du Vin. I hadn't checked reviews before booking (I'm glad as may have been put off) but relied instead on the chain's reputation. I love the building and the interior decor. Calm and stylish without being cold and clinical like so many hotels. The wood and leather in the bar and lounge area, the spiral staircase and metal bar all very much to my liking. The superior room was at the rear of the hotel which was disappointing but the room itself was lovely with a large walk in shower and a free standing oversized bath. The separate toilet was a nice touch and the tea and coffee making facilities with fresh mike were amongst the nicest i've seen. The bed was large and comfy. We didn't use the bistro other than for breakfast which was very nice. The service was good and the food fresh and tasty. I missed having no cheese or cold meat selection with the breakfast buffet which I consider standard in most decent hotels. Overall I enjoyed my stay and would return. I would like a front facing room for the price I paid and the car park charges were unreasonable in my view.

Stayed at this hotel in conjunction with a civil wedding there. It is staffed mainly by young foreigners, some of which have difficulty with the English language. The bar prices are horrendous, ( a bottle of beer & 2 glasses of mediocre wine £22.75 - they're having a laugh !!) no draught beers, the bottle of wine prices are strotospheric, & the service slow & poor. The food was average. Parking outside the hotel on their property was £10 per night. My room was ok with a large bed & decent shower/bath but the decoration was a bit jaded & the window frame wood was rotting on the inside. At £110 for the room & parking they need to up their game. They have a number of other hotels around the country - lets hope they are not in the same league as this one. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

Room Tip: Stay on the front of the hotel NOT the rear since the rear facing ones overlook a tired courtyard &a...

I am, or was, an HdV fan but times must be hard as standards are edging towards unacceptable. Breakfast, for example, included coffee so weak it could barely crawl out of the filter, toast that was surely made from industrially sourced bread substitute and all served by a nice chap but for whom waiting on table was a new challenge. And the room. Sorry but surely we have got beyond smoky, smelly rooms these days? No - a boiling hot room even with radiator turned off so open the window to lung full of smoke from the smokers patch just below the window. Come on HdV, sort it because you ain't cheap.

Room Tip: Tread carefully, apart from the smokers rest (see above) some rooms are apparently in the "lowe...

Yorkshire is such a pleasant part of the country we knew planning a weekend away to Harrogate would be a perfect location to explore. We just needed the perfect Hotel.

Hotel du Vin is sophisticated, elegant and a touch of class. Our room was spacious and had all the amenities we required and the bed was extremely comfortable. The Bistro had a good selection of food for us to choose from and being the Hotel Du Vin the wine was a little expensive but the choice was extensive. We had a bottle chosen for us to compliment the food we had ordered, and this was an excellent choice.

The staff were excellent at the reception and at the Bistro, they were pleasant and extremely helpful. My only criticism was that in the morning the breakfast staff were a little grumpy, but the excellent English Breakfast we were served made up for that.

I would not hesitate to recommend this Hotel and as it is in the middle of Harrogate the location is also perfect.

I booked two "superior" rooms for 02-May. My sister & husband were visiting from Sydney, and she had expressed a liking for Harrogate. The stay was very good; shower, bedding, decoration, cleanliness, rear garden all excellent. The HdeV concept is brilliantly executed, but a Ryanair accountant seems to have got in on the job at some stage, which is a shame. When booking, one should note that breakfast is charged extra. The other charge, which took me back somewhat and creates a poor impression from the off, is parking in front of the hotel at £10/ 24 hours. There is a multi-story car park just along the road, which may have been more reasonable.

Room Tip: Superior rooms appear to be front of house, overlooking the Stray, noise is not a problem. Recommend...
