“Getting There”
Reviewed 15 July 2014 via mobile

We make an annual pilgrimage to Harrogate and have, for the last 10 years stayed at The Crown. I do not like The Crown and have slated it in previous reviews.
This hotel is better than the Crown - Much, much better.
However, it is an example of the continual cost of trying to keep a very old building up-to-date and keep it maintained.
All public rooms are great. The centre of everything is The Fat Badger pub which attracts many locals and visitors and is always busy but with very efficient and polite bar staff. We spent several hours in there and with the weather being good, the outdoor area was rammed.
I had breakfast on two mornings and it was fresh, tasty and served politely and efficiently.
Now, the negatives:
- Room was large
- Room was dated with poor furniture and peeling woodchip paper
- Bath was too shallow
- Room was insufferably hot
- Bed was two singles pushed together. It was too hard.
- Bed had all electrical sockets behind the pillows (Because it was two singles pushed together) - Dangerous!
- Wifi was out if signal
- Taps on sink were wrongly positioned and too close to the edge
- Numerous fag ends in the gully outside the window.

This is a hotel with potential and with a great asset - A car park!
It just needs a bit more cash spending on it but I do understand why this would be an issue with such an old building!

I stayed here for one night this weekend as I was attending a trade show at the Harrogate Conference Centre and this hotel is within easy walking distance. My room was small and a little dated which was not a problem, however the extremely noisy and hot extractor fan right outside my bedroom window made for a very unpleasant stay. I complained as soon as I checked in about the loud humming noise and extreme heat in the room (I think caused from the extractor fan and being next door to the utility room as well as it being warm outside) however was advised the hotel was fully booked and I could not be moved. Receptionist arranged a small fan for my room which made a slight improvement. Had a very hot and bothered night's stay. Hotel Manager offered a complimentary night for a return stay in a newly refurbished room in another area of the hotel.. may take this offer up as Harrogate such a lovely place to visit but in no rush for another evening at the White Hart Hotel.

Our first time at this Hotel - probably not to be repeated. Looking a bit tired and shabby but clean and with pleasant helpful staff.
The main problem was that there was a wedding that night which we had not been informed of and our room was directly above the function room so was very very noisy until after midnight. Had we been informed of this when we booked, we would have made alternative arrangements as we had to be up early the following morning and had planned to turn in around 10pm.
Also - the lack of air conditioning and the very hot humid weather meant that we wanted to leave the windows open, but the cigarette smoke trailing up from the beer garden below meant that this was not possible.
All this needs explaining when booking so that the right options can be explored.
On the plus side, the breakfast was good and the staff we spoke to were always polite and helpful.

Rooms are nicely decorated but you can tell everything is now old and worn out. Walls would need a lick of paint. Its really hot, no air con, I had a massive wolf spider in my room and while running out of the room because of it I forgot my phone charger. I returned home and called reception to see if they've found it. I was told that the head of housekeeping said nothing was found. I asked them to check again and explained where I've left it but they've refused to look for it again.

Pending a visit to Harrogate my wife noticed a 'bargain break' on a Saga leaflet, offering an evening meal with a bottle of Prosecco, bed and breakfast at less than £100 for two people which sounded extremely good value..
However a 'standard ' room at the 'deal price' was apparently not available, so we paid an extra £30 for a 'superior' room which turned out to be not very superior!. The room was reasonable in size, but the small window looked straight out at another, and very close, building, the glass cover on the dressing table was badly cracked and the room's decoration rather 'tired' - leaving one to wonder what the 'standard' rooms might have been like!.
In many ways the deal proved to be extremely good ... the staff, both in reception and in the restaurant, were very pleasant, attentive and helpful, the menu offered a reasonable variety of choice and the food was cooked and presented well, and we had an enjoyable stay - such a pity that the 'superior' room failed to be 'superior'!.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms at the back, and aim for one that looks out over the gardens at the front of the Hot...

On our recent first trip to Harrogate my wife and I chose The White Hart mainly for its central location. It soon became apparent that we'd made the correct decision. Our room was faultless and the view tremendous. The hotel's bar, known as the Fat Badger, had a wonderful traditional feel about it and the patio area was much appreciated. The food being served looked very appetizing, but we chose to eat in the restaurant and were treated to some of the best hotel food we have had for a long time. The staff were all friendly and being mainly locals they were able to point us in the right direction for the best of Harrogate (of course including Bettys). Overall we believe The White Hart to be one of the best value hotels we have ever stayed at.

Room Tip: Ask for a front-facing room if possible

A pleasant break with great front of house staff....rooms ok though no extractor caused some dissatisfaction!!! Breakfast was uncooked and waiters need training...shame great potential to be a star in Harrogate!
