“Emily saves the day!”
Reviewed 10 August 2012

We booked into this hotel at the last minute, after a very traumatic start to our honeymoon, to find that the shower didn't work in our room. The staff, particularly Emily, within minutes sorted this out and moved us to another room. Hot showered and a glass of complementary bubbly later and all our problems were sorted. The room was excellent - exceptionally clean, food superb and the building lovely with a pretty beer garden

Have stayed here on numerous occasions when working in Yorkshire.

It's basically a gastropub down below, with some rooms up above.

Very convenient if your business is visiting Harlow Carr RHS garden (which is within walking distance), or if your business is with one of the many companies inhabiting Cardale (business) Park, which the hotel borders. Do not be concerned, the hotel is not "in an industrial park", it borders a smart business/technology park, and a brand new large and flash-looking police station.

It is true that you check-in at the bar. It is also true that sometimes the bar and waiting staff ignore you for a bit. If this happens, I suggest you stand somewhere more-or-less bang in their way, and grab a menu from a table to read. This usually communicates your desires.

The food is not the cheapest, but it is good.

There are two floors of rooms above the bar and restaurant. I think 12 rooms in total. Some (but not all) of the rooms on the top floor are a little poky with roof angles and smaller beds. But most of the rooms are actually quite spacious (with larger beds).

There is no elevator/lift. And the staircase is not the widest, especially as you go up to the top floor. So wouldn't be ideal if you had problems hauling yourself or luggage.

They do seem to have problems positioning mirrors at the right height. In several rooms I have caught myself thinking "I'm glad I am not dressing for a wedding, because I can't see more than a bit of myself in any mirror". Same goes in the bathrooms - stand up tall to see enough of your face to shave.

I think there is only one room that has a bathtub, but most rooms have a bigger-than-usual shower. Some mould problems in some bathrooms. I guess this is difficult to eradicate with steamy bathrooms in a cold stone building. Very very very hot water (with accompanying warning sticker).

Yes it is true that the floorboards creak a LOT. The heating works well. WiFi is free and has always worked for me.

The Pine Martin has a comfortable but high class feel about it. The food was great and the service was good. The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and inviting. The food prices could be a little cheaper to make this place perfect, but it still worth a visit and we are returning customers.

I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the pine marten, while attending a trade show.
This is a lovely looking hotel, with a nice country feel. I did find it hard to decide if I was at the right place as the only indication that this is an innkeepers hotel is the very small logo on the pine marten sign.
It is not obvious when you enter where you actually book in and because it was so busy I thought I had arrived through the wrong door, however when I asked at the bar it turned out that the barman/manager booked you in at the bar.
My room was in the attic and for a single person the size was ideal, however had my hubby been with me he would have struggled not to bang his head on the beams. The bathroom was lovely although paint was starting to peel away from the ceiling above the shower. There was a few cobwebs on the windows and when in my colleagues room he had a rather huge cobweb hanging above his table. Not a major issue.
I did find it a bit of a pain trying to get out early Sunday morning as the inside doors are locked for security, however I don't think that should be necessary when we all carry key fobs to get in the place. Also breakfast wasn't till 8am on Sunday which wasn't great for me as I had to be at the trade show for half past, so sadly went hungry. Had continental breakfast on the Monday though which I enjoyed, cooked was offered at extra cost.
In all I would come back here to stay. Lovely staff, lovely rooms and relaxing environment. Thank you.

Room Tip: If your tall make sure you don't get attic rooms.

Stayed for 1 night, rooms were clean & good size. Check in was at the bar which was unusual but the staff were friendly and the meals were very good in the restaurant?

I have driven past the The Pine Marten many times on regular business trips to Harrogate but have always elected to stay in the middle of town, but on my most recent trip I decided to give The Pine Marten a try. And what a pleasant surprise it was!

OK, the room wasn't large but perfect for one night's stay. It was clean and well decorated with a good size shower and everything worked. And for £66 including continental breakfast it was good value.

I ate with a colleague in the restaurant and service was prompt and attentive and the food more than adequate. Two mains, two desserts, beers and a decent bottle of red came to £65. Again very acceptable and good value.

The hotel is a couple of miles outside Harrogate but is a good location for RHS Harlow Carr which is a short walk away.

All in very good and I will return.

Unless you have a logistic need to be able to walk to Harlow Carr RHS garden, which we did. The place is bigger than you might think, and is clean. It is very popular so must be doing something right, but not for us. We stayed two nights and concluded that we could have done much better. There is a saying that you only make one first impression, and the Australian (?) guy on the bar should realise that by ignoring us, then fiddling endlessly (quite a few minutes) to pull a better pint of beer before handing the task to another member of staff, then not apologising at all and finally being slightly gruff is just not on. Then the room. DO NOT ACCEPT ROOM 9. There is nowhere to stand up straight except just inside the door. each side of the bed is under a slope, and then a huge beam makes you dip even lower to get to the foot of the bed, then the same again past the other side, then wind through a pokey 'dressing' area (where the mirror is unsuitable for make-up I am told), and then into a quite large and well equipped bathroom. If you need the toilet during the night it would be a tricky journey unless the car-park floodlight outside the window stays on!! We did not eat there, but descending the stairs there was plenty of aroma of food. There are lots and lots of better places to stay.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else
