“Normally good but not this time”
Reviewed 19 June 2013

I like to think I offer a fair and balanced view when submitting these reviews. On that basis, I have stayed at the Pine Marten (Innkeeper's Lodge) a few times previously and been more than satisfied. However, on this occasion, the service received was very poor.

I checked in just after 9pm and had a bit of a battle with the lady checking me in over the method of payment. The booking was made via an agency on a bill-back basis but she insisted I pay using my own credit card. I refused and eventually was able to get my key. I then asked what time they stopped serving food, to which she replied in a minute. When I asked what time specifically, she said 9:30, which was 25 minutes away.

I decided not to eat in the hotel, went out and returned at 11pm. The main door was locked with a sign on it saying to ring a number. I did so and the door was opened by the same woman who frostily said I should use the side door. I didn't know there was a side door and there was no mention if this on the sign.

Other than this, the hotel is still a fine place to stay and eat. The building is lovely and the rooms are boutique style and. Comfortably furnished. Nonetheless, after a long journey from Aberdeen, the poor attitude was not appreciated!

Visited this hotel on a trip to Harrogate. Booked last minute and was inexpensive. On arrival the hotel was very attractive. A lovely old building with lots if character. The bar was great and that night prossecco was on offer so we had a bottle and it was very nice. The room was good value but was a little dilapidated in places but for the cost it was very good. Ate in the restaurant in the evening and despite being very busy the service was very good. There was a complimentary continental buffet breakfast which had a good selection. Overall very good and would visit again for an inexpensive break.

I really dont want to say anything negative about this hotel as the interior/Exterior are lovely with whoever owns it clearly spending a lot of money on it BUT its a bit like renting a house out and you go back after the tennants have moved out and all the really nice things youve put in havent been looked after. Lovely Tiles in bathroom and shower that have gone mouldy because the showers been leaking for so long, mildew on walls probably caused by same problem, wardrobe door handle hanging off, Holes ( and thats being polite)on stairway carpet i would say one was really dangerous
Dripping of Shower all night was annoying even with door shut and a towel in the bath to try and reduce the noise!
Breakfast was poor apart from the cereal everything i had to drink or eat i had to go and find the waitress (who was filling cupboards) to ask her to get some,Orange juice- ran out, bread- ran out, coffee- ran out,Croissant- Ran out, She was very polite in getting the things i asked for but concentrate on breakfast ! Do the cupboards when the people who pay the wages have gone back to the rooms fulfilled, happy and wanting to come back
What i would say this place needs is someone in charge whos efficient because with not too much effort it could be a real gem

It's a great location and ambience. The food choice is excellent and the food we have was also excellent in taste and presentation. The 'apart from'...relates to the rough edges of one main meal being forgotten (with appropriate apologies) and absence of a bread ordered at the outset. Helpful staff but perhaps something not quite working re systematic approach to organisation? We would return.

We stayed overnight at the Pine Marten as we were visiting relatives nearby. The rooms were spacious and comfortable (we had a family room and a double for the five of us) and check-in was smoothly handled by the lady who was also serving behind the bar. We were blessed with nice weather for a change, and the gardens are pleasant and well-kept.

The reason for only giving three stars was the service and quality of the breakfast. We had all pre-ordered an English breakfast as it's always one of the highlights for us of nights away from home. When we arrived in the dining room, there were no staff to be seen and a number of tables hadn't been cleared. We did eventually see a waitress but had to call her over as she would probably have just ignored us otherwise. Breakfast took ages to arrive - a good 30 minutes - and was on the poor side of average with bacon which would have benefited from an angle grinder and eggs which were in some cases only partly cooked and in others completely solid.

All in all a shame as the hotel is nicely situated and the rooms are decent, and the European staff at the bar and check-in were helpful and polite. The service from the (English) breakfast waitress was however pretty disgraceful and certainly shouldn't be expected from an establishment which charges over £100 a night per room.

I have just returned from what should have been a quick lunch with family at the Pine Marten, and have felt compelled to share my views. Our table was booked for midday, and we were quickly shown to it, but that's where the positive notes finish. Within 10 minutes a waitress returned to say that one of the special dishes was no longer available. This was at 12:10, so I can only assume that every other diner in the restaurant had chosen that dish within 10 minutes of sitting down! Either that or they hadn't ordered sufficient calves livers!! Our order was taken after a fair wait, and to be fair the starters arrived in a reasonable space of time. After that the waiting staff had the attitude that their job was done. The plates weren't cleared for a long time, and then the main courses took an inordinate amount of time to arrive. When questioned, we were advised that the order was just being plated up. When it arrived, some of the dishes were undercooked - perhaps a sign of being chased?? Little details were missed which made what was an annoying meal even more frustrating. To cap it all I had to leave my family at the table because my 90 minute lunch break had expired! Not a very heartening experience at all. For an establishment that charges premium prices, the service leaves a lot to be desired. It will be a long time before I revisit.

We stayed 2 nights at The Pine Marten while visiting family in Harrogate and were very happy with the friendly service and had a comfortable stay. We had the continental breakfast that is included in the price and it was more than sufficient. Also dined in the restaurant on the Saturday and enjoyed our meal.Plenty of choice on menu.
Plenty of parking.
Location was very good as we visited Harlow Carr gardens which is just over the road and also walked into Harrogate through woods and entered Valley Gardens and came out by the Pump Room
