My wife and I visited Bishop Monkton last week-end and we had the unfortunate experience of visiting The Lamb & Flag and coming up against the rude and miserable pair who run the establishment. After informing the few locals who were in the pub that they were closing and to get a drink if they wanted one, I went to the bar for a drink and was told the bar was shut. The time was 9-20pm. A notice on the wall stated the bar was open until 9-30pm. This is the second time this has happened to me in Bishop Monkton. The first time was in The Masons Arms, last year ,when all the locals were served before me, and we walked out, If these places don't want caravanners in why don't they have the courage of there convictions and put notices up " LOCALS ONLY ". The proprietors of both pubs can be assured of one thing - IT WONT HAPPEN AGAIN. we are finished with Bishop Monkton.

Room Tip: A lovely Old English pub run by two people who have no interest in the pub side of the business.

Looked for somewhere close to Harrogate and came across the Lamb and Flag which had good reviews so decided to give it go. They say that first impressions count and for us that was certaily the case. I had phoned to say we were going to be late and was told not to worry as they served food until 8.45pm. We arrived at 8.55pm and feared the worst only to be told to relax and check into the room first but to order the food so that it was ready when we came back to the bar.
The Fountain room was exactly as described by previous visitors (a converted barn) and the buffet style help yourself continental breakfast the following morning was an absolutely novel and extremely enjoyable way to start the day. The regulars in the bar on an evening made you feel very at home as did the open fire. Whilst the food was very good and cooked fresh it did not elevate itself above many other places I've been to before, but that said the locals must rate it very highly as it was packed out for the traditional Sunday lunch.
If like us you would rather put money into smaller business and get "looked after", rather than "attended to" as is normally the case in the larger hotel chains, then you wont be disappointed staying here.

The Fountains room was clean, warm and spacious, with a large comfy bed and flat screen tv. Hosts Carol and Trevor were friendly and helpful, and the food in the cosy pub was good.

I loved having breakfast in my room, and the fridge was replenished daily with milk and a variety of fresh meats, fruit juice, bread, croissants, scones, etc. Cereal, fruit, biscuits and tea/coffee was also provided.

Broadband and mobile reception were a little patchy, but that was the only negative thing. I didn't want to come home!

Stayed one night at The Barn at The Lamb and Flag, The Barn is just behind the pub. We had the Jervaulx room which has a double bed, en-suite bath and shower, it does have more room in it than appears on the web site picture (November 2013), as the large double door wardrobe has been replaced by a single door wardrobe which is now in the corner near the window. This means the TV on the desk is now visible from the bed, which has a small shelf now on the wall side. The room is very comfortable, well decorated with efficient heating the en-suite is well designed with plenty of hot water. We enjoyed the continental breakfast, which included cereals, ham, cheese, brown, white and fruit bread to toast, plus juice – whilst we watched the morning news on TV in comfort.
The only problem we had was the Wi-Fi would not work in the room, in the pub it seemed to depend on where you were as to how well/ or if it worked.
See separate review of our stay at The Lamb and Flag Inn.

There are 3 converted barn rooms; we stayed in the Rievaulx room that had the Double bed, additional sofa bed, en-suite bath and shower. It was very tastefully decorated and had many nice features. We ate in the pub for the first night of our 2 night stay; this was good home cooking & reasonably priced. Carol and Trevor Pawson are delightful & very helpful. The best thing by far was the in-room Continental breakfast, that was put daily in the room. It means that you don't have to leave the room for breakfast, & what we had gave us enough for a snack lunch too. Over the 2 days we had mineral water, fruit juice, tomatoes, salami, ham, garlic sausage, hard & soft cheese, jams, white & brown bread, fruit loaf, crumpets, fresh fruit, yogurts, tea, coffee (filter bags, normal, de-caff),hot chocolate...and probably some things I have missed too !!

Room Tip: All 3 looked good, each hard their own special features.

Lovely pub in a great little village. We stayed in the Fountains room and it was perfect for a weekend away. A very comfortable room furnished to a high standard.

The continental breakfasts in the room to have at your leisure is a brilliant idea! We ate our evening meals in the pub. The food was outstanding and selection of ales much better than I normally expect. The fillet steak and lamb chops are a good choice. Theakston is the local beer.

Would definitely stay again!
