“Relief Manager”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

We booked this for an overnight stay on the spur of the moment to attend a funeral. It had good reviews and was very reasonably priced online. It is a popular pub. Do not be out off by the outside. The pub could do with refurbishment but that did not matter in the least. We had a large quiet, clean, spacious room with a king sized bed. We had good mattress, a sofa and an easy chair etc. The relief manager went out of his way to be helpful even when we were very late for breakfast due to a misunderstanding. Thank you.

Room Tip: Ours was Room 2

Sometimes relief managers can make the visit worthwhile. Six of us booked three rooms for a weekend stay, it was a reasonably inexpensive at £109.00 B&B for two nights, unfortunately, two of the rooms were below an acceptable standard, one had vomit in the lou and the other had a bad smell, we brought this two the managers notice and they dealt with the problem immediately. The breakfast were good in spite of the relief managers being required to run down the stock before the new owners took over. On our departure they reduced our bill by two nights stay and did not charge us for our drinks bill, it goes to show that courtesy cost nothing and sometimes the rewards can be tangible.

Room Tip: Room 7 at the top of the stairs of the rooms was the best of the rooms but it is a long climb.

This is effectively my local now. A most unpreposessing exterior which I wouldn't have found if a mutual friend in the Indian take-away over the road hadn't said he was going to wait for his food in the pub. Sunken ground floor of large corner house on the main Bristol Road out of Gloucester that also runs as a bed and breakfast hotel. Leather armchairs in one end, Sky Sports and a skittle alley in the other and a basic pub food menu of good value.
The big attraction for me is that there is always a selection of at least 6 to 8 real ales and a fairly extensive selection of single malt whisky. This may be down to Gordon, the landlord, being a Scot!
Its a Wadsworth house and there are the usual selection of lager/cider as well as (sometimes) mild ale. Smoking area out the back. Parking oyou need to go on street.
Lunchtimes are my favourite, when it is often fairly quiet - I frequently use it for business lunches as well as a regular lunch with my wife.

• friendly hospitable pub hotel near new dockside development and only 15 minutes walk to city centre
• good quality and generous grilled English breakfast
• good ‘pubby’ bar with excellent cask beers in what’s obviously a popular “local” for many with a hands-on friendly landlord
• outdoor seating front and rear
• clean, comfortable rooms with thoughtful daily trimmings like complimentary biscuits and mineral water
• would certainly use again - especially as Gloucester has improved greatly since our last visit in the 1990s; new lively dockside cafes & shops; the many historic city centre buildings are being promoted and developed for visitors

We booked the Linden Tree last minute. We were going to the Gloucester Blues Festival and wanted something not too far away from the action. We were a bit apprehensive as some of the reviews were not very good. But, we were pleasantly surprised. Ok, so some people were disappointed, but to give the bad reviews that they did was very unfair. We were shown to our room (No. 4) which was a twin bedded room. Spotlessly clean, very white bed linen and towels. Flat screen television, trouser press, hairdryer, tea, coffee and biscuits etc. Clean bathroom with a good shower. There was nothing to complain about. Door a bit creaky, but it is an old pub. This is a pub with rooms, a very nice pub. Lovely atmosphere with friendly staff. Great breakfast, with nice fresh coffee. The tables were laid out at side of skittle run, and they had plastic table cloths, which was not a problem for us. It was all very clean, which is more important to me than a white tablecloth. The ladies serving the breakfast were also very accommodating and friendly. This is a pub with rooms, and that is what you have to remember when booking. It is not the Hilton, so if that is what you want, then the Linden Tree is not for you. BUT, if you are looking for very welcoming, very clean and comfortable accommodation, and a nice pub, then you won't go far wrong than booking the Linden Tree. The cost was £60.00 for a twin room, with breakfast. Great Value! 15 mins walk into the centre too, so we didn't have far to go for the Blues Festival, which was great by the way! If there is a negative comment it would just be that perhaps the pictures on the walls in bedroom could be updated - that's it! Would we visit again? Yes, we would, and probably will if we go the festival next year.

Great value. Large room, bit dated but very clean with some nice touches - hairdryer, good selection of teas, coffee, trouser press, toiletries, extra pillows. Loved the location, great Indian a minute away, fab cafe across the road and only ten minutes walk into town. Our room at front of pub was a little noisy but personally I loved listening to all the pub noises whilst tucked up in my little bed. All in all better than expected. Great price and would return
