“Average 3 star not 4”
Reviewed 5 February 2013

This is a nice hotel if it were a 3 star. The room was clean and comfortable, not quite a 4 star due to the tired bathroom decor, and tatty towels and bathmat. The breakfast was buffet and OK, but also not quite up to standard. A little bit more service (a few more staff) would have improved the breakfast. The spa too was only OK, as it was more like visiting public baths than a hotel. Needs redecorating and in the style of a 4 star hotel. I won the one night stay here, so did not actually pay for it, but have reviewed it had I been a guest paying the going rate. Nice enough stay here but just a little disappointing.

Room Tip: You must have your own transport

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We meet all 4 star criteria as specified by the AA, the main governing board for the UK, these are the only guidelines we can realistically work to. They perform unannounced yearly inspections of all of our areas.

I am writing to inform you of our feedback following our visit on Monday 4th February 2013, where both my girlfriend and I attended your hotel for a spa day, treatments and afternoon tea.

When we arrived we very impressed with the main hotel reception which gives a very good image for Hallmark, however, we thought that the leisure section was very dated compared to the photographs advertised on Wowcher. The green painted artex walls and suspended ceiling didn’t match the boutique image that is portrayed in the photographs.

Aside from the décor, the treatments manager was very accommodating and we did enjoy our massage and facial which was included in the deal.

In addition, we felt that the pool facilities were very poor in terms of what was offered. Again the contemporary theme portrayed from the very elaborate photographs didn’t match what it was like in reality. There was limited space to swim in the pool and we felt it was poorly designed and unclean. There were cobwebs in the window reveals that surround the pool.

We were also very disappointed in the shower facilities that were provided. The shower lasted short of 30 seconds when pushed and there was minimal pressure.

In terms of value for money, we feel cheated as we had travelled over 60 miles to attend your hotel for the day and found that what was offered and what was delivered were very different in terms of what was portrayed on the website. It felt to us that the main hotel had huge investment and little invested in the added leisure section to the hotel. I would compare the current facilities similar to a local pool near us where we would pay no more than £10 per person and get more than half of what is being offered at the complex. I would say that the spa treatments were worth their money but the whole deal at £85 is very steep to what is offered.

It is always a challenge to manage the expectations of our guests and we are sorry that your visit was not as you hoped. I have been onto the Wowcher website and can only see up to date images of the club at the moment. Our Health and Spa facilities are busy, used by hotel guests and Health club members.

Have just returned from a weekend stay with family. Grandparents stayed 2 nights and we (2 adults, 6 yr old, 4yr old) joined them for second night. All of us stayed on a dinner, bed, breakfast basis in a double room, plus a family room.

What's good: The hotel is modern, clean and spacious. The family room was huge with 2 separate children's put up beds (no sofa bed thankfully!) and a very comfortable king bed. Food was good and well priced though breakfast wasn't the highest quality. Pool is excellent, warm and a really good size with beds around for relaxing.

What's not so good: We lost a swimming costume in the changing room - left 4pm on Saturday and when we returned 10am on Sunday assuming it would simply be in lost property were told nothing had been handed in. We were later told that there have been some problems with clothes being taken from the changing rooms - so I would advise using lockers and don't leave anything lying around.

Nice touches: The check in staff were excellent (I have found this at other hallmarks) and it was a pleasure at check in and check out to be greeted so warmly. Restaurant staff were busy but equally good. We also arrived hours before check in time but were given our room key which really got us off to a good start!

Be aware: The hotel is near a housing estate and there are no pubs/ restaurants nearby - beyond the dry ski slope bar opposite. There is a tesco express 5 minutes drive away (right out of hotel).

Overall: We would stay here again thanks to the great pool and staff and found it to be good value overall.

At first glance the hotel seems very nice, the hotel staff were very kind and efficient however the room I stayed in had no hot water of an evening, after reporting this to the front desk I was told to run the tap for 10 minutes and the water would come though... Not the case! 2 nights in a row I had to have a cold shower even after running the taps for 20 minutes.

The food was to a good standard unless you have a normal appetite then you may find yourself 10 minutes later, although this is an alacarte me menu the other options you have are not enough.

I woul personally not recommend this hotel to anyone...

I am sorry that you did not completely enjoy your stay with us. In the past we have found that running the water shortly solves any issue in regards to lack of hot water, I am sorry that this was not your experience, I would hope that if you had come back to us we would have made further attempts to fix this issue. I apologise that I am not clear as to your meaning in relation to our menu, we offer a comprehensive and market leading selection of dishes on our menu alongside daily specials and easier dishes on our bar and room service menu.

This was a business trip and the first time I have stayed in a Hallmark hotel. the first thing that struck me was it was in a very strange location, it seemed to be in the middle of a housing estate, I'm not sure who was there first, but it is definitely an odd place to put a hotel. To be fair I did arrive and leave the same way so don't know what is on the other side. The hotel is a bit different to most hotels chains and has a contemporary style in decoration, although the striped carpet may not be to everybody's taste, luckily its only in the corridors not in the rooms. Check in was fine and the staff efficient. The room was very clean and tidy, and the bed was quite comfy. Room service, although good ,was fairly expensive , especially the drinks , and this was not helped with a hefty tray charge. The room was unfortunately to warm for me through the night and the thermostat seemed to do little to remedy the situation. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice and you could have as much as you wanted. The staff were all very helpful. It was certainly good for one night and I would probably stay there again, that said there was little that made it stand out from the rest, but to be fair, they also did not do anything wrong. I have certainly stayed in much worse places.

Room Tip: If you like a cool room at night, check with reception before you accept the room.

Stayed in mid 2011 during the refurb and our stay was awful. BUT we were asked back by a previous manager to come for a complimentary night, dinner bed breakfast and a free bottle of wine. So after a hectic year and forgetting about this offer, a few weeks ago I remembered and i asked the hotel if they would still honour it, and they did which was great of them.

Since the maintenance the hotel is a different place, the refurb has made the hotel an attractive modern place to stay for either business or pleasure. The receptionist called Holly was amazing and made our stay. Nothing was too much trouble for her, so thank you.

2 bad points which we find hard to moan about but wouldn't be fair if we didnt mention.

We had the beef and the turkey for dinner. If we were paying for it we wouldn't of. It was the cheapest thinnest rubber meat possible. The chefs can definitely cook as the starters were amazing, but definitely need more free reign of their main course budgets as £16 is a lot for a main course. As I said though starters and breads were amazing.
Lastly in the morning, sat next to us at breakfast was a big sweaty guy with shorts and vest on with no shoes on at all! He had come straight out of the spa and wasn't very pleasant to have to eat next too! Maybe a policy for shoes at least maybe a good idea.

I feel like a hotel critic after this! But overall it's a great place to sleep and relax. The refurb and your staff make it for the hotel.

Stayed for three nights with my wife between Christmas and the New Year to attend a wedding. Overall the hotel is very good value for money and we had no complaints. The hotel does look a little dated on the outside but inside it's been recently refurbished and is very smart. The bed in our room was large and comfortable, and housekeeping did a good job keeping the room clean and tidy. It's true that there was no A/C but we didn't need it in December and found the heat easy to control on the radiator thermostat. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and friendly throughout the hotel. Buffet breakfast was OK, but we did enjoy the evening meals we had in both the restaurant and bar and found them reasonable value for a hotel. We didn't try the spa so cannot comment on that.

The downside of this hotel is it's location. As others have noted it is on the edge of a large council estate and there aren't any nice pubs/restaurants in walking distance so unless you drive elsewhere you could feel a little isolated if staying for more than a couple of nights.

Room Tip: We booked a suite for a very modest supplement which turned out to be very large and comfortable.
