“Excellent authentic African food with an excellent host in a homely setting.”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

Wow! We just wanted to try the place out after reading prior reviews but after a leisurely lunch on Saturday we rushed to reserve places for lunch on Sunday as well. We tried the goat curry on the first day with plantain and cassava which was delicious. You can ask Charlie to customise the spice in your curry. The next day my husband had the Ethiopian Goat curry and I had the Ethiopian King Fish. Both these were hotter than than the previous ones we tried but absolutely delicious with a spice mix of about 15 different spices. I cannot recommend this highly enough! Everyone visiting this area absolutely MUST try Charlie's wonderful food and hospitality.
P.S: Call well in advance especially for dinner at weekends.
You have to decide what you want to eat and inform Charlie in advance as everything is cooked to order, fresh. This includes sides as well, of which I highly recommend plantain and cassava chips.
Payment is cash only.
You can take your own alcohol.

“Really Great Experience”
Reviewed 22 July 2014 via mobile

Came here on a Sunday even though it is normally closed. However Charlie (owner) was happy to oblige as it was my sister's birthday. And she's quite fussy about food.

First of all, Charlie was excellent. Couldn't ask for a nicer more hospitable host.

The restaurant was very homely and we felt relaxed and appreciated.

The service was great. Charlie really took a pride in his food and our experience.

And the food was really super. Great flavours and beautifully cooked. Just a shame we couldn't have had more it was so good. Especially the pan fried lamb.

All in all, a great experience. Thoroughly recommend it.

Thanks Charlie!

“Relax & Enjoy”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

The food is stunning. So, just take your own booze & relax. Oh, and order the banquet menu, perhaps give your preferences as to meats and spice. You might find places with that are more salubrious, with more professional and quicker service, but you'll struggle to find somewhere with such genuine & sincere hospitality, and like I say, such stunning food.

“Hidden gem! ”
Reviewed 15 July 2014 via mobile

This unassuming little restaurant is a hidden gem in Gloucester! Small and unpretentious from the outside, most people would walk straight past without thinking twice... DONT!

You would be a fool not to give this place a go!

The owners are friendly and clearly care so much about their work. Getting up ridiculously early to start barbecuing the meat.

We normally have the banquet meal, which allows you to try a bit of everything. The starter of BBQ chicken with plantain and salsa is amazing. you don't need a knife, just touch the chicken with a spoon and the meat falls off the bone, it's so tender! HUGE portion sizes.

For the main we have a selection of curries, including goat, all at varying spice levels to suit everyone. These again are top notch! You can't fault it!

Even if the food wasn't good, in fact even if the food was inedible, I'd still keep going back just to sit and chat with the owners. Charlie & Wanja are the friendliest couple you could ever wish to meet. They treat all their guests as if they've been friends for years.

I wish this restaurant all the success, they deserve it.

“Wow... what an Experience”
Reviewed 14 July 2014 via mobile

This place is truly a must try if you're in the area, or if you not then come anyway.

I had the pleasure of being greated by Charles and already knew we were in for a great night.

The table is your for the night, so don't ever feel rushed.
It is also BYOB so also feel free to bring what you want, although they do a few fruit juices.

Our meals were sublime. Charles spoke about all the different flavours we would be tasting and the history of the dishes.

We had a slow cooled chicken for starters and a selection of curries for mains, all varying in spice and flavour and amazingly each one was better that the last.

Looking so forward to going back ....if only I can get a table when its not fully booked.
