Holiday Inn Gloucester - Cheltenham
Ranked #11 of 21 Hotels in Gloucester
Reviewed 9 August 2012

The management of this hotel need to wake up to what the competition are offering. I have been paying £110 a night corporate rate for an executive room with breakfast. If I invited my spouse I would have add another £10 for breakfast.
Total £120 a night.
To this you must add dinner at £20 a night plus any extras.
Just 2 miles down the road from this hotel, there are four star hotels deluxe rooms for cheaper including breakfast.
The confort of this Holiday Inn is average, sheets are poly cotton which is rough on Madame Lux's delicate sensitive skin.
The executive room gives a slightly better bathroom, a safe, a mini bar, free wi-fi and a sofa.
The cost is an extra £ 11 more than a standard room and for the price I feel a little cheated.
Food at the restaurant is very good, Chef and Julie are real troopers.
Tomorrow, I am checking out after 2 weeks here and heading for the competition down the road, where I hope to get a good night's sleep and management that understand the needs of a lady on business. Only 6 more weeks of hotels to go !

Dear Madamelux,

Thank you for your feedback and for choosing our hotel. I am glad to see that you left some feed back on what you liked as well as what fell below your expectations. I appreciate the compliments on the restaurant staff and the food offered. It encourages our team members to work even harder and consistently delight our guests. All of the basics were covered and the hotel had a clean, modern feel overall. The food was tasty, with ample portions and plenty of choice (especially at breakfast). The service at the front desk was somewhat indifferent and a few mistakes were made, but soon rectified.

Efficient reception, good bar, staff excellent, Gammon Steak amazing but rooms are average.

Business hotel as it is on an industrial estate but well run and does what it says on the tin.

Holiday Inn please get rid of those stupid labels on the pillows!! I know the difference between a firm and soft pillow !!

I booked this hotel from Late Rooms and for the price I was expecting a few nights stay in a basic hotel. I was then pleasently suprised at how clean, fresh and modern it was. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and the room was a nice size that has everything that you need. Even though the room service is a tad expensive ( but where isn't it?) the food was delicious. Me and my boyfriend would recommend it to any travellers.

We arrived last Thursday and had arranged for a deluxe room, but if that was a deluxe room I'd hate to see the basic, however it was clean and comfortable. The first night we decided to eat in the hotel, but once again although the staff were friendly and the food tasted great we were disapoointed. We decided to order the shared platter which arrived with no plates, so we started to use serviettes until my husband thought enough was enough and asked for plates. Ben the head waiter was very good and ended up taking the price of the sides off the bill, especially when it was pointed out we didn't get the pork pie, apparently the waitress forgot to tell us. However although we paid the resteraunt bill in the resteraunt along with a tip and politely left, we had to query the final bill at check out because it was still on itl andwe ended up feeling like mass murderers when we mentioned it all for the sake of under seven pounds because we had purchased the dinner vouchers on arrival.
Breakfast is very good value and the price of drinks reasonable and the mini bar is operated on a trust basis so we did feel comfortable purchasing a pint of milk and keeping it in the fridge, unlike some places where if you even move an item you are warned you will be automatically charged.
A major downside was that there is no covered smoking area and the area they do have off the dining area never had the ashtrays cleaned once and there was little or no lighting.
Toiletries were above average and tea and coffee supplied but it is apparent that most of the travellers must be travelling alone because it was a case of one of everything or two sugar sleeves two tea bags etc. Although we did ask for extras I didn't think we would need to when the booking form stated Mr and Mrs and I presume our room (53) was on the 'deluxe' floor.
Now I don't want you to think I am a 'snob' keep mentioning deluxe but when you consider the price of other hotels on last minute.com I must admit I was gutted and wish we hadn't have upgraded.
The wedding packages looked brilliant value for money, but we did feel sorry for the wedding guests having to congregate in the main entrance.
We wouldn't stay here again i'm afraid not the place for romance or 'amore'

Room Tip: Don't bother to book a deluxe room

Having picked up a night at this hotel very cheaply via the Holiday Inn website, i was half expecting this to a be a tired, old hotel. However i have to agree with the other reviewers that this is a good hotel. It is a very clean and modern hotel, and we were met by very friendly and professional staff on check in.

The room itself was of good size (we were upgraded to a club room), although for some reason they had made up the sofa bed and added an additional bed, so it was a bit crowded! The bathroom was also a really good size with nice amenities, and all the usual needs were there (tea station, ironing board, big LCD TV etc).

Did not use the restaurant or leisure center, so can't comment on those, and would reiterate that the hotel is in a more industrial area, so a car is needed to get to and from the hotel easily.

All in all, very well run and great value for money, would definitely stay again if i am in the area

We needed somewhere to stay on our way home from the Royal Internatonal Air Tattoo and found this hotel at a good price on one of the hotel sites, the location looked good, although we normally stay at Premier inns and have never stayed at a Holiday Inn before.

Very glad we booked the hotel as on the way from Fairford there was a problem with road closures due to flooding and it took us over an our at one point to cover 2 miles, on arriving at the hotel half the car park was out of action as it was raining so hard it had become flooded.

The first thing that struck us when walking into the hotel was having to negotiate the cloud of toxic cigarette smoke, there was a wedding and a fair number of the guests were smoking outside the main entrance, it was fairly gross, especially as we had to make a couple of trips to the car.

The interior of the hotel is spacious and clean, with the chap on reception being very efficient booking us into an executive room on the first floor, there is no lift to the first floor, but not many steps to carry cases up.

The room was a good size, with a very comfortable bed, room safe, mini bar, large TV, robes and a very clean bathroom, although the shower could do with a little more pressure in it.

The bar was nice and the 20% discount voucher a nice touch when we booked in. We didn't realise the hotel had a spa and swimming pool, had we known we would have been sure to have packed our swimming gear. We will stay here again when we have anything on in the area and next time we will make sure to have a swim.
