“Bargain Break”
Reviewed 22 April 2008

Good base although surrounding area is not that great - office blocks and a Sainsburys, was expecting beautiful scenery.
Family rooms were spacious and clean although nearly £8 if you paid to watch a film..rip off !
We got this break for £99 which included 2 nights,1 evening meal and breakfast both days therefore a real bargain! Dinner was ok,a carvery,no other choice, drinks were really expensive, bottle of white wine £17 and nearly £5 for a rum and coke, cheaper to nip across the road to Sainsburys and drink in your room!
Staff very friendly, leisure facilities an added bonus and no extra charge to use except aerobic classes.
I would recommend staying here but wouldn't pay the full price, look out for the deals..well worth it !

We're a family of four (two adults, one teenager, one primary school age) who needed to stay in the Gloucester area to visit family over Easter. We picked the Holiday Inn chain as we'd previously had good experiences of them.

LOCATION: The hotel is actually in Barnwood, a suburb of Gloucester, and about 3-4 miles outside the actual city centre. It is hidden behind some new-looking office blocks, and isn't very well sign posted - you really need to print off a map to find it, or esle trust to satnav ;)

PROS: clean and tidy. Good parking, well kept exterior. Reception staff friendly and very helpful. We booked one room between the four of us, and were pleasantly surprised at the size and quality of the room - one double bed, two single beds, TV, tea+coffee+hot chocolate making facilities, trouser press, iron, ironing board and safe (!) Bathroom was clean and well equipped with toiletries and towels. The facilities in the hotel were excellent - free newspapers, terrific swimming pool, sauna and steam room. We ordered room service, and the service was fast, the food was excellent, and reasonably priced - amazing for a hotel! As it was Easter, the hotel had also hidden 4 small chocolate eggs in the room for the kids to find - top idea, and great fun! We got breakfast included in the price, and it was excellent - a range of cereals, fresh fruit, and cooked food was available. Terrific!

CONS: signposting/directions to the hotel were there, but not the best - thank goodness for satnav. If you want to use it as a jump point for visiting the area, it is out of the way - you definitely need a car. No restaurants or cafes or fast food places within easy walking distance.

COST: we got the room for £102 per night which is was just £25.25 per person! Considering we got a terrfic breakfast plus use of the facilities in the hotel, we thought this was SUPERB value.

SUMMARY: excellent value for the money, friendly and efficent staff, good quality food, and great facilities. We were highly impressed and would recommend this Holiday Inn to anyone.

This was the second time I'd stayed in this hotel for a convention and the thing that has struck me both times is the friendliness of the staff who seem happy to put up with convention attendees milling around in the foyer till all hours. This is always much appreciated and really makes the whole experience that bit better. The location of the rooms means that nobody is being disturbed by people staying up all night in the public areas, so you really do feel you can relax and enjoy it.

The rooms are what you would expect from this chain and I have no complaints with them whatsoever. The staff who service the rooms are thorough and respectful of your privacy and your need to sometimes be in the room when they would like to get in to clean.

As it's kind of in the middle of nowhere on an industrial estate I can't really imagine anyone coming here for a holiday but I could be wrong. It is actually very easy if you have a car to get into Gloucester centre and there is a massive Sainsbury store within walking distance.

Breakfast is pretty good here and most of the staff in the restaurant are really nice and helpful.

My only complaint overall would be the price of the drinks - nearly £5 for a gin and tonic is utterly ridiculous.

  • Disliked — Price of drinks at the bar

Saturday night stay. Pretty average all in all. Booked an executive room, which was small but clean and had all amenities. Stated that a complimentary newspaper was provided, but never saw one. Mineral water, orange juice and bathrobe were provided.

Bathroom fine and bed reasonably comfortable. Lots of noise along the corridor though from children in nearby rooms.

Restaurant was mediocre - advertised as a buffet dinner, but choice very limited. Better selection at breakfast.

Would stay again if in the area for convenience, but not for leisure visit. No serious deficiencies - just not very exciting!

Stayed at the hotel for a business meeting. Second stay and pretty much duplicate of previous. Asked for an Executive room which was offered at way below published rates.

Clean and comfortable with water/orange juice supplied. Modern decor in rooms and public areas. Not a large hotel but had quite a friendly feel to it. Staff very helpful on reception/bar and restaurant.,

Obviously in a hotel "chain" but probably above average standard. Location reasonable for central Gloucester but you need a car or a taxi as there is nothing (apart from a profusion of Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society Offices) nearby.

Restaurant food standard for this type of hotel and reasonably priced. Gourmet however it is not.

Health club facilities which I did not try but noticed steady stream of "day members" from around 9.00am in the morning.

Most definitely the sort of hotel used by business people mid-week and for local companies as a meeting venue but still pleasant in its own right.

If you are in the area and are looking for reasonably priced hotel accomodation well worth considering. I would however baulk at their published rates so look for "a deal".

  • Liked — Comfortable;Clean; Friendly staff
  • Disliked — Hotel Chain feel. You could be anywhere

1 night, get away with the wife.

Very nice hotel, great bar and restaurant areas, very well appointed. Reception a little slow, well no one in sight actually, had to go looking for someone…

Room was very good, ample size, bed comfortable.

Very good leisure centre

Would stay again
