Have walked past so many times but today it was open so we popped in. What a stunning little church bursting with history. The friendly volunteer told us about the wall paintings & the old Crypt schoolroom. Fascinating :)

Wonderful and right in the city centre. Very helpful guide/volunteer who should be congratulated on their knowledge of the church and Sunday School movement

“Now this a understated but VERY interesting place!”
Reviewed 23 August 2013

We happened on St Mary while walking down to the Cathedral but was closed up at the time but an interesting look around the Church yard through the arch at the end of the old Schoolroom. The passage through apparently dates back to King Alfred's Daughter, Queen Aethelflaed. Happily the Church was open when we came back down later in the day and is particularly interesting to look at the layout inside including the School Room and the Master's Accomodation - now empty - over the top. Alot of intesting connections over the years and it is good to hear that plans are afoot to revive the fabric now that apparently the City Centre residents have dwindled to the extend that there is only one service a week on Friday lunch times. Really hope that the plans work out - "use it or lose it" I think applies here and it would be a huge loss to lose it!!

“St Mary De Crypt Church, Southgate, Gloucester.”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

A fascinating church, damaged by Royalist cannon fire in the Civil War and adjacent is the original Crypt school room. The Crypt Grammar school still exists out of the City but the original schoolroom is next to the Church. The last time I went there the room was closed due to the floor being unsafe. The school has strong links with the church and was founded in 1539 by local merchants John and Joan Cooke. Pupils include such luminaries as Henley and the preacher Whitfield.nearby is cafe Renee in the alleyway called Marylone and is a good place for a drink and lunch.
