“nothing special”
Reviewed 17 July 2013

The menu is rather small - little choice.
Friendly staff.
Glasses could have done with a clean as they smelt strange!
Price okay.
Building very different, and pretty, grounds well presented.
Food can be eaten either in the building or outside the tables outside have umbrellas to keep you cool in this heatwave!
Nice friendly atmosphere.
Not really suitable for vegans!

“Was expecting something better”
Reviewed 27 June 2013

Had previously been here for a lunchtime drink on way back from Garden centre and had a really nice experience... very nice friendly chef served us.......showed us around and the place looked lovely...after looking through the menu/specials board decided to take time to return for a meal/we did this last night/ very disappointed/ table wasn't set up for us/no cutlery etc: till we got our meal/ and very canteen looking. So, so different to what it was the last time we saw it. Perhaps it was because it was a Saturday and they had a party there that night....who knows Menu not that special either / specials not at all special. As we had travelled there/got a friend to give us a lift so we could all have lovely evening I was very disappointed but hey we enjoyed each others company... sorry all but we felt as tho' we could have had better..... should really have said so whilst we were there but think the lady who served us kind of knew......

“An inviting sign but the coffee wasn't very good”
Reviewed 14 June 2013

We have driven past the Dark Barn once a week for about 7 years. Recently its been looking more inviting to stop for a break there. It describes itself as a Gastro Pub and Coffee Shop, alongside being a hotel, camp site and wedding venue.

As usual I was after a decent cup of coffee and saw a good coffee machine in the building. The place empty but the waitress was friendly and showed us to a window table in the old barn (which wasn't that dark!).

The décor was old fashioned and rather dated, but hey we only stopped for a coffee and a flapjack. "Sorry, we've run out of flapjacks!" but it was said with a smile so it wasn't too bad. Its a shame the coffee wasn't too bad!!

Two black Americanos arrived. If you ask for black then you don't have to serve milk, but it is rather good to have the cups reasonably full - only a small learning point here!

But what did it taste like? Very very poor - like it was made by someone who didn't drink coffee or didn't know how to make good coffee even though they didn't drink it. If you buy a decent Italian coffee machine then you should be able to make very good coffee. You must learn how to use and clean the machine and you should use decent coffee beans to grind for whatever coffee you are making.

The coffee could have been from a jar of instant - thin, a vague taste of coffee and pale in the cup. The UK has got better at coffee but the Dark Barn has a lot to learn about making an Espresso and turning it into a good Americano.

Does this really matter? Well we won't return - no great loss to them, but we could not recommend them on this experience. We will write an honest review on TA. We won't stop for lunch next time because the coffee was good and place was inviting.

The garden centre about a mile away serves better coffee and guess where we will stop next time?
