“Good Example”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

I was staying locally and as I drove through Witcombe towards Birdlip I saw the road sign to this attraction. As I was not aware of it before, I didn't really expect much. The villa can be found by following the narrow lane through a farm to the small car park. You need to walk the last part. I was pleasantly surprised at the extent of the foundations of the Roman Villa. There has been a building on this site until the 5th Century. It was very interesting and there are some pleasant walks in the area. I would suggest planning a visit to the area and taking in the Roman Villa as part of a circular walk. The Roman Villa is located not too far from the Cotswold Way footpath.

“Bit disappointing”
Reviewed 27 September 2013

We arrived to be quizzed by a charming young man who was trying to complete a questionnaire on behalf of English Heritage about the place and us. It was a little premature but he got the answers. The place is well presented but a lot more could be made of it. There were no staff available and very little documentation to read or study.

“Tranquil Setting”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

We found Great Witcombe Roman Villa difficult to find. But if you take the turn toward Witcombe and Birdlip from the A46 at the small roundabout, it is then signposted up a single track on the right hand side. Well worth finding as the remains are set in beautiful countryside. The visible remains are walls up to a few feet high in places and give a good outline of how big the Villa used to be. There are two small modern buildings in the bottom far corner of the site which I believe protect a mosaic or two. These are always shut as far as I know, which is a shame. It also wouldn't take much for English Heritage, who manage the site, to provide a few more details to visitors of the functions of individual rooms and parts of the Villa. If it's mosaics you're after the nearby Chedworth Roman Villa is a much better option.

“Roman ruins and glorious Gloucestershire countryside.”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

Following the single track lane through the farm yard, and on up the small hill to the car park, this is not just a trip into history, it is also a drive into glorious Gloucestershire countryside.
The 4th century Romano - British knew the best sites to build, and this villa is sited just a little off the Glevum - Corinium (Gloucester - Cirencester roman road) And what a view it is today.
Just the Roman foundations remain, although locked away, except for special occaisions, are the floor mosiacs.
Built for the new masters of Roman Britain , this must have been an opulent showpiece with hypocaust heating and spring baths. It was quite a statement of who was in control in the land.
The great views from the villa remain just one of the resons why we enjoyed our visit.
