“A watering hole On route”
Reviewed 13 August 2012 via mobile

We were on our way to blackpool from cornwall and Stopped here half way up. Clean room. We had a quad room. Good shower. We had a super prebooked breakfast in the ajoining pub before heading on up north. Pleasant stay but my only niggles were 1/ only one spare socket so I had to chose between charging phone or laptop. 2/ the room was 27 degrees c when we arrived and we all slept on our beds without duvets and with the fan on all night.

We've stayed at many Premier Inns and always been impressed. This P.Inn however was disappointing. Functional, yet lacked the friendliness that P.inn are known for. Room was uncomfortably warm even with the noisy fans supplied. Breakfast was self service - including the cooked breakfast. We were greeted with 'it's over there'.
Tip of the week. Nip down to Sainsburys for your breakfast. They open at 7.30. Good value, hot meal and served with a smile......

Two nights away on a short break. First the good news: Premier Inn's usual clean, spacious and good value accommodation. BUT: this was the most disappointing PI stay I can remember; 1. while all of the staff were polite and helpful, some seemed unable to summon a smile - not the end of the world in terms of service perhaps, but the 'pleased-to-have-you-here' welcome costs nothing and is what separates PI from a lot of other budget chains; 2. as others here have commented, our room was desperately hot at night, to the point where refreshing sleep was impossible even with the windows full open and the large fan on full blast; why the room temp should still be 27C first thing in the morning when it's only 13C outside first thing in the morning is a mystery, but it's something I've experienced at other Premier Inns and to be honest it makes you wonder whether it's worth paying the extra to stay somewhere with air conditioning. And 3. our experiences in the adjacent pub (evening meal the first night and breakfast the next morning) were enough to send us to another restaurant for the second evening and the local Sainsburys superstore for our breakfast the second morning - the place was clearly understaffed, we had to wait ages for our food to arrive, mains & side dishes were served at intervals rather than all together, and we had to keep asking for breakfast items (especially the self-service cooked ones) to be replenished because they'd run out. And I really did not appreciate being escorted (however politely) back to the hotel to pay for our breakfast in advance just because they were, for some reason, unable to accept payment in the pub itself. Would I stay here again? Frankly, no - at least one of the other budget hotels in the Gloucester area just has to be better than this......

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the dual carriageway - it's very noisy.

Great price, great location, friendly staff, excellent room, most excellent bed

For Gloucester, the Cathedral is one of the most important in Europe, the Cotswolds is one of the most beautiful regions of England. Regency Cheltenham is nearby too.
THE HOTEL
The hotel is divided into the bedroom building and the Wheatstone Inn, where you can have breakfast, dinner and has a full traditional bar. The distance between the buldings is about 30 steps!
HOTEL ACCESS
The hotel is just off the A40, coming from Cheltenham, Stroud directions its just on the left, from the left turn on the roundabout. As its a dual carriageway you will need to carry on westbound to the next roundabout and come back down the other side.
SURROUNDINGS
Don't expect great views, it looks over the Walls Ice Cream factory, however, there is a lovely path leading townwards, follow this and in about 10 minutes you will come across a lovely arboretum. Perfect for a stroll on a warm sunny evening, it has giant Red Woods and an Indian Bean Tree, amongst many trees and meadow flowers.
You can walk all the way into the city centre from this path too. It also serves a cycle track.

That's about it!

We frequently stay at Premier Inns and love them, however this was left us disappointed. The staff were lovely and the location good however, bizarrely, the room was like a sauna. I know it was August but outside the temperature was only 17degrees. Why then, in our room was it 26.2 degrees all the time? We stayed for two nights but had very little sleep. Although fans were provided they were noisy and inadequate. We slept with the window open, trying to let some cool air in but as our room was above reception (201) the noise of people/ taxis/cars coming and going all night disturbed us. I am aware of the good night guarantee promise but quite frankly thought that it would seem ridiculous to complain about the heat. Premier inn can you tell me why that room is like a sauna? Is it over a laundry room or something?

This premier inn is in a convenient location for a stopover when travelling along the M5, and has good sized rooms and comfortable beds. It is also clean and the staff are helpful and friendly.

BUT unfortunately we had a terrible nights sleep because of the outrageous heat. The fan was on all night and the windows were open to try and cool the room down, but that created a good deal of noise from traffic and the fan. I had to try and cool the room down though because my 9 year old son was tossing and turning, sweating and crying all night because of the heat. The room thermometer never got below 27.5 degrees Celsius, far too hot for a comfortable nights sleep.

We went to the adjacent pub for dinner. It was mad busy and way overpriced for standard pub food. At £10.49 for a chicken salad and £4.99 for dessert our family meal for 5 with drinks ended up costing £80 which cancels out the benefit of booking a budget hotel.

Premier Inn is in effect a budget chain. However, I think it is at the top of that particular league. It was clean with modern facilities. Bedroom and bathroom were spotless.

All of the staff were helpful and keen to provide a hospitable and efficient stay. Premier may become my regular overnight stopping place.

There was little noise overnight, even in a busy central area. Beds comfortable.
