“A Hidden Gem !”
Reviewed 4 December 2011

I recently arranged a mid week break for my mother and her friend at the New Inn Gloucester as I wanted a central location so she could explore Gloucester on foot. What an amazing place ! It was like stepping back in time to what can only be described as a Harry Potter mystical courtyard !! The hotel has been around for 600 years so has all the character and detail that the big chains lack . The place is seeped in history and the managers seemed only too happy to share some stories with my mum.
The restaurant boasts a great menu serving British pub food at great value with friendly service , the pace was relaxed and service genuine . She had an amazing time ,so I would like to thank the team for taking such care for her and would recommend this hidden delight to any fans of olde England !!! 5 stars in my opinion

Room Tip: All rooms have very unique character and charm but the Lady Jane Grey suite is worth a peek !

I've had the pleasure of staying at the New Inn several times and have always enjoyed my stays there. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms, lovely and comfortable. The historic charm is a wonderful bonus, and as it's right in the center of the city,it's convenient for shopping and sightseeing. The restaurant serves delicious meals at very fair prices, and the bar staff are personable. Will return again with pleasure!

Room Tip: As there are no ground floor rooms, and it is a historic building, you will have to be able to walk up...

I stayed for 1 night before a business meeting in single room 211. Overall the experience was okay considering the price paid. However, there is no excuse for dusty cobwebs in the corner of the bedroom, black mould in the shower grouting and a towel rail that has not been cleaned for a long time.
The bar staff were friendly and the bar snack I had was good value and tasty. The breakfast included in the room price was good, too, with a range of cereals, fruit juices, yogurt, fruit & a hot meal cooked to order. I had weetabix & a full English which was good and I didn't need to eat for 12 hours.
The room was very warm on a cold night but the mattress on the bed was a bit thin and therefore lacking support. No noise problems as the room overlooks the rear of the property.
So this hotel is in a good location, has character, friendly staff, decent food, modest prices, free wifi and subsidised parking costs but it is ultimately let down by shoddy housekeeping.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the rear so you don't hear the early morning deliveries to the adjacent shops

Certainly not a posh hotel but it has an old world charm that we just loved.
Our room was big and very clean and comfortable. Some of the rooms have four poster beds as i had a look around them on the Sunday morning when i was chatting to the cleaner about the history of the place and it's ghost sightings. The staff were all really really friendly which we have never had before at a hotel.Really made you feel at home.
Breakfast was very good too...loved the couryard sitting out are too nice for a cup of tea or a drink from the bar. The bar shuts fairly early i think it was 11 so no rowdy noise if you are worried about that spoiling your sleap.
It is steeped in history and it's situation is excellent for visiting Gloucester as it is right in the town center
The car park is easy to walk from ...just exit the carpark on foot the way you came in bear left..a road that services the shops bhs and arrive at the hotel side door(just past the back of the guildhall) it really is only a short walk, suited us just fine. The hotel stamps your ticket so you pay much less than you normally would so hand it in at reception.
Getting fed up of the generic hotels where they all look the same . This is way different very quirky and we will be booking in to stay again next time there is something on in Gloucester for us to see at the Guildhall.

Stayed here on a Saturday for a trip to take in a rugby game. We arrived a couple of hours before check-in but the receptionist was happy to take our bags off us and have them sent up to the room while we went out. The twin room was excellent value at £50, spotless and a huge bathroom.
The bar is a proper pub rather than just a hotel bar, friendly staff, selection of real ales and decent, cheap bar meals. It gets lively at night which might be an issue for some guests but we enjoyed a few drinks back there after a night out in the town. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the meals looked nice and there were plenty of people - quite a few locals as they were in rugby colours - eating there.
Breakfast was fine, buffet style English breakfast - not freshly cooked individually for you but perfectly pleasant, hot and a good selection.
The hotel is right in the centre of town as well, I'm really surprised at some of the earlier negative reviews, we can't really fault it at the price.

If you have read some previous 'poor' comments I am happy to dispel any doubts. The staff were all very friendly, happy and helpful. The room was warm, comfortable and clean. The food was great and chef happy to organise scrambled or poached eggs at breakfast that were not in the buffet. A charming and historic hotel with lots of atmosphere and in the centre of town. Hotel and food extremely good value and I will definitely come again.

Booked this hotel on line before reading reviews and to be honest I don't kknow what the complainers were on about - it didn't seem to be the same place as I stayed. All staff, reception, bar and resteraunt were extremely friendly and helpful. The room, we were lucky enough to have the Oak Suite, tremendous!!! We would definitely stay there again, location is ideal and NCP car park just 2 mins walk away and much to hubby's dismay M&S on doorstop.

Room Tip: pay the extra for a 4 poster
