We booked Afternoon Tea for 4 to celebrate a special occasion. When we arrived the receptionist was far from helpful, we expected to have tea in the comfort of a lounge or similar, but we were sat in the restaurant. The table was initially only set for 2! There was no one else in the restaurant and there was no atmosphere. The sandwiches were dry, the cake very small pieces which looked shop bought and the scones were flat and hard. We were not asked if we would like more tea, and the way that the waitress kept coming out and obviously looking to see if we had finished made us feel uncomfortable. This spoilt a very special day.

Cold food and lacklustre service. We had to repeated ask for bread and sent the soup back to be warmed.

I am a bit reluctant to write this review because the staff were so lovely and tried very hard to make our experience there a good one - sadly they were let down by quality of the food and organisation. We had a cream tea for a family of 12 and the food was simply dull, limited in choice, small portions and very badly presented.
Afternoon tea is all about the look, the exquisite cakes and impeccable service.
I find this very unfortunate because it really would only take someone from the hotel to visit other quality establishments and see how they do it - the service, the presentation of the food, the selection of afternoon tea items, etc - and implement some changes. The changes wouldn't cost much if anything at all but the impressions to the guest would be a dramatic improvement.
This is a real shame because the setting is beautiful and, as I said before, the staff we met were lovely and very helpful.

We recently tried a 6 course tasting menu, a Travelzoo deal, which was very enjoyable with good size portions and did not come away feeling hungry. The Restaurant staff were very helpful, chatty and relaxed. When we asked for the bill, we were told to go to reception. The receptionist clearly did not want to take payment said it should be done in the restaurant and moaned about her job and the changes that were taking place.I did not want to hear about it and took the edge off an otherwise very good evening. We were also overcharged for the wine but sorted that out quickly.

Four of us ate at the restaurant using a Travelzoo deal which made the cost of the evening an amazing bargain.

The restaurant was welcoming and comfortable, the food on the "tasting menu" was of a very high quality and thoroughly enjoyed by all of us. The wine list was surprisingly reasonably priced (though our first choice was not available) and the range of wines whilst not extensive was more than adequate.

The service we received was good and prompt though it was obvious that our waitress was new to the job she was very pleasant and charming. When one of the dishes was served "out of order" they quickly realised, apologised and checked we were happy to continue with the new impromptu arrangement - we were.

I am sorry that it has taken me so long to discover what is a lovely restaurant almost on my doorstep, that serves fine food, good quality wine with pleasant service. Now discovered we will be going back to take advantage of what there is on offer here.
