Owner description: Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby. We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire. We also run education and learning programmes, and hold events and exhibitions with the purpose of sharing knowledge and inspiring creativity and making amongst the people of Derby. As well as schools and student learning, we run many events for adults and groups, as well as families. Our collections and the information we hold about them are as unique as our location and history; we are a city continually shaped and driven by creativity and innovation, located in a valley that changed the world. The services we provide are also designed to promote the city: using its rich and important past to inspire its future.

Loved the museum, but not the coffee shop, the cake was stale and sandwich had a red hair in it and was told that items are made by milly mays of Mickleover which I looked up only have a 3 star hygiene rating NOT GOOD

“Average Museum”

If you are in for paintings by Joseph Wright, this is the place. However, other than that it is an average city museum. Friendly and helpful staff.

I like this Museum very much and although some of the exhibits have never changed I still find something new to look at I recently took my grandchildren there and they thoroughly enjoyed it especially the interactive parts

“Unexpected delight”

We were so surprised by this little gem of a museum. We were attracted by the Joseph Wright paintings but there is so much more there, including an amazing ancient boat that it was a privilege to see. Some of the museum is typically fusty Victorian stuffed wildlife but there is a lot more thoughtfully displayed so it really captures the imagination. We went on a Sunday morning and sadly had it almost to ourselves. The staff are friendly and very helpful. And it is FREE. Do pop in if you are in the area.
