Owner description: Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby. We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire. We also run education and learning programmes, and hold events and exhibitions with the purpose of sharing knowledge and inspiring creativity and making amongst the people of Derby. As well as schools and student learning, we run many events for adults and groups, as well as families. Our collections and the information we hold about them are as unique as our location and history; we are a city continually shaped and driven by creativity and innovation, located in a valley that changed the world. The services we provide are also designed to promote the city: using its rich and important past to inspire its future.

Not being from this part of the world or having a particular interest in art I had never heard of Joseph Wright, however this museum had a great temporary exhibition about his work and about the 18th and 19th century habit of copying works of art (with a dressing up corner for kids and adults!) Explanations of local geology and early and prehistory, and the history of a local regiment (sorry forgot which one it was) local pottery. There appeared to be a lot of work going on to update the displays too. We spent a morning there, would have taken longer with children

Quite interactive! lots of things to see and do in there. Portrait gallery is beautiful. some bizarre and lovely exhibitions, took us about an hour and half to walk around. REALLY lovely, knowledgeable and helpful staff! Different exhibitions every so often too. never known them to have a dull one. :D Love it!

“An unexpected delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2014

There was a lot to see and discover in a small building. We went as there was a special art exhibition by Joseph Wright, lived in the city, which was excellent and well worth the visit for that alone. The museum was very interesting and well displayed, with a work area for children/school parties and a talk being given by people dressed in clothing appropriate for the First World War, which a group of children were listening to for a school project. Very well presented.

“An example of how good a small museum can be”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

This is a small and free museum tucked away in the City centre - the front desk staff were friendly and welcoming. A fascinating museum that is very well curated and we found ourselves spending considerably longer here than we'd planned to. Lots of interactive stuff for kids, and big kids.
