Owner description: Derby Museums is an independent trust and organisation run for, and on behalf of, the people of Derby. We provide a museums and arts service, accessible to everyone, and are responsible for the curation of all the artefacts and works of art entrusted to us, and the buildings in which these are held. Our aim as a new organisation is to bring as many of these objects into the public domain as is practically possible and exhibit them in ways that delight and inspire. We also run education and learning programmes, and hold events and exhibitions with the purpose of sharing knowledge and inspiring creativity and making amongst the people of Derby. As well as schools and student learning, we run many events for adults and groups, as well as families. Our collections and the information we hold about them are as unique as our location and history; we are a city continually shaped and driven by creativity and innovation, located in a valley that changed the world. The services we provide are also designed to promote the city: using its rich and important past to inspire its future.

Started at the top floor and worked our way down. This venue is free to enter so is well worth the visit. Tried on a few period costumes on the top floor, plenty for adults and children to use including wigs which were very clean!! Did a few sketches sat around large tables with plenty of drawing equipment provided free of charge. Did not spend long at the museum but will return for another visit when next in the area. Cafe on site if needed. Staff were very helpful and even looked after our bags whilst we looked around the museum.

Took my 2 grand daughters (12 and 8) to this museum and art gallery which I used to visit when I was a kid. Was a bit worried about taking them as they are more than happy to sit all day playing on their ipads. I needn't have worried as they found the visit very interesting and educational. Will certainly take them again.

We knew nothing about Derby and even less about Joseph Wright and came out well-informed after a very pleasant hour's perusal; also found out more about John Flamsteed the first Astronomer Royal. A great place to visit on a wet afternoon.

Really lovely little museum and art gallery with plenty to look at and explore. When I visited, they were in the process of moving a whole exhibition so there wasn't as much as usual but it was still a lovely trip out.

I probably wouldn't spend as much time there as I would at another museum but it's definitely worth taking a few hours to visit.

There is a shop on the way through the main door with plenty to look at and all reasonably priced for a museum.

Together with 3 friends, we visited the museum and art gallery primarily to view the Joseph Wright exhibition. I was new to JW but the exhibition was well set out and informative. The staff were particularly helpful. Don't miss the opportunity to dress up in period clothing and have your photo taken! The addition of a cafe was a very welcome interlude. Need to revisit a s didn't have chance to see the mummies I remember from my childhood.
