“Very good, nice place to stay but......”
Reviewed 3 July 2013 via mobile

We stayed here in late June whilst visiting friends and relatives. We normally stay in a Travelodge so this was a nice change and we were looking forward to a good breakfast next morning which was included in the price (£60). We had no complaints about the room which was clean, comfortable and airy. I particularly liked the free wifi and the modern tv. It's a quiet location so we slept well. The bathroom was clean and I'm always pleased to see a bath and shower rather than just a shower. So far so good. We went into the restaurant for breakfast where we were confronted by the waitress, a pale tired-looking wraith who looked as though she should be back home in bed. We were crossed off a list of guests at the bar and sat ourselves down. We were not told what the procedure was for breakfast, it was several minutes before we were asked if we wanted tea or coffee and we did not get our toast until after we'd finished breakfast. Whilst we were eating several other guests came in, like us, not knowing where to sit or what the breakfast arrangements were. We were so concerned about the waitress we asked if she was ok. She informed us she had been up most of the night being sick! We have no wish to blame the waitress as it was patently clear she was too ill to work. She told us she had to come in as there was no one else to cover for her. I have no idea whether or not the management were aware that the waitress was ill, probably not. However, some guests may not have known the waitress was ill and would have put the dilatory service at breakfast down to poor quality staff. We informed the manager before we left, not wishing to get the waitress into trouble but we thought the problem at breakfast should be brought to his attention. It has not put us off the Littleover Lodge and we intend to stay again in the future.

My wife and I went to the carvery yesterday and had a very nice meal. I had the beef and my wife had the pork. The veggies were plentiful and the food and plate were both piping hot. For £6.50 each we thought it was good value.
If you’re looking to have a reasonable Sunday lunch that is not going to break the bank then this carvery should suite you well enough.

Went for Sunday carvery, first impressions of residential accommodation were awful, rotting woodwork, dirty windows etc. carvery restaurant far too crowded with tables more like motorway cafe, beef was not fresh onky half a joint of it obviously reheated from night before, dry and stringy Chef allocated roast potatoes 2 per person Yorkshire puddings were frozen and like cardboard mash full of margarine veg undercooked and skin on gravy. It might be cheap at £6.50 per head but trust me it is dire and anyone who is satisfied has obviously never visited a decent carvery. Would never ever go back even if it was free of charge.

Very nicely located with pleasant rural views, six of us spent 2 nights here and were well satisfied with the whole experience. The evening carvery, at £3.99 per head was exceptionally good value with a varied choice of meats and vegetables which were enjoyed by us all on both evenings. Very pleasant, helpful and friendly staff was an added bonus.

Room Tip: Suite was excellent for socialising with the four other people in our party - large lounge with comf...

My wife and I had a very enjoyable two night break here.
We were allocated room 1 next to reception which is over two floors with the bed on a mezzanine level. It was spacious, comfortable and kept pretty clean. Going down to the toilet at night did seem a bit odd but you get on with it.
We had dinner in the restaurant both nights. The food was plentiful, well cooked and the service generally attentive. The set menu is limited and we would have preferred a change on night two, but that is being picky.
Breakfast is served in the carvery. First day was a continental buffet and full English choice off a menu, second day was all help yourself buffet. There were scrambled eggs on the buffet but fried can be cooked to order. All items were well cooked and very tasty. Refill on tea/coffee was a bit slow.
All the staff we encountered were friendly and responded quickly to questions and requests.
The hotel is easy to find off the A38 and there is a bus stop at the end of the road if you don't want to take the car into Derby. If you walk 10 minutes up the road you get a wider choice of routes and a maximum 20 minute wait.
We would use again, hopefully during some better weather, but they have no control over that.

This hotel has two separate dining areas, we've now had the misfortune of having dined in both.

First of the main restaurant. This place is very much a case of it could be so much better..........

If - The waiting staff knew what they were doing, fundemantal such as asking a customer how you want a steak cooking when taking an order, providing butter for bread, pointless drivvle and giggling when asked anything.

If - The cooking staff had actually had some training and knew what they were doing. Fillet steak was grilled to within an inch of being leather, vegetables doing back stroke in the water they had sat in for the past 3 hours.

If - The place was given a bot of care and attention and brought upto date as it is so 1970's!!!

Secondly the carvery. This could be so much better.......

If - It was closed down, demolished, re-built, with new management, staff and whole new concept. If you only want to pay £2.99 for as much as you can eat carvery, then this si the place for you, I just hope I never have the misfortune of having to go back. Plastic meat, cooked so much it's turned to cardboard, soggy vegetables, raost potatoes that could be used as WMD's etc. etc. DON'T GO you'll only regret it!

We made a last minute booking at this hotel after we were once again let down by travelodge. I'm so glad we did! The rooms were clean and big! the setting is lovely. We were traveling with our four show dogs which they didnt charge anything for. The staff were friendly and helpful.
We ate a lovely dinner outside in the sun with our dogs. The manager came out and chatted to us which was really kind.
We will no doubt come and stay again.
