“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014 via mobile

We visited this restaurant with a large party so all meals was pre ordered. I was sceptical but can honestly say the best food I've tasted in a long time. The staff were so helpful, friendly and could not do enough for us. I would highly recommend visiting this restaurant b

“Where is this place? Couldn't find it.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2014

Sorry to rate this place as poor. Not a comment on the restaurant itself as we didn't get that far!

Booked in advance, noted the postcode and used Google map to get us there. Found the college and the Roundhouse so assumed we had arrived but no signs confirming this. The only car park we could find nearby was the Derby BR car park at a charge of £7. After walking round the front of the building the only access into the college seemed to be via a turnstyled gate at the reception.

On walking through we were approached by a young security chap who asked us what we wanted. We explained we were looking for the restaurant. He asked if we had an appointment, we said we had booked. He seemed suspicious and said he would check. While we were waiting we looked for directions but found none. The chap returned and said he would escort us. I asked for verification that this was necessary and he seemed to think it was. As we didn't want to be 'escorted' to our lunch we declined, returned to our car and went elsewhere for lunch.

It is quite possible we were in the wrong place or there was a misunderstanding. I'd be pleased if someone would confirm this is the case and we would try again. But, if it wasn't, what on earth is going on? The website said it is a 'social' place. That certainly wasn't our experience.

“Unbelievable value for a delightful meal”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014 via mobile

Finding the restaurant is a bit of a challenge, located behind secure barriers with a distinct lack of direction/advertisers signs. The utilitarian entrance belies an intriguing exposed brick renovated old engine shed, which has been sympathetically transformed into a modern restaurant. When we attended, there was an absence of other diners (Sunday lunch) and this contributed to a bit of an ambience vacuum, however the staff were delightful and very attentive. I did find the paper napkins being flicked out and laid in your lap by the waiter a little disconcerting, and the introduction of real cotton napkins would introduce that little touch of class that I'm sure the students would appreciate.

You would never know you were eating in a training establishment as the standard is very high, and the food is well prepared and deliciously presented. I understand the reason for a limited menu, however a choice of only four for each course could be extended without necessarily causing too many problems. Having re-read what I've written so far, I am being rather negative, and that isn't a true reflection of our very enjoyable time in the Engine Shed. At £15 for a three course meal of this standard it was unbelievably good value. We'd have happily paid double. The drinks were not overly expensive and I'm sure that when the place is buzzing with happy diners it's a great place to eat. Just as an aside, when making a phone booking, the lady taking the call was absolutely charm personified, and very welcoming. Try it you won't be disappointed.

“Very good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 August 2014

This restaurant needs attention and more diners. For the cost of the evening this should be much busier. The food was great. I went with some colleagues whilst up in the area for work. Every dish was well cooked and well presented. I had the smoked chicken and poached pear for starter, pork belly for main and cheese for desert. The house wine was very god as well.

I would expect to pay much more for a meal this good. If you are in the area I urge you to go along.
