“Good Hotel In A Convenient Location”
Reviewed 31 August 2008

We stayed at the Marriott Swindon en route to Southampton and we used Marriott Rewards to pay for the stay. It is very easy to get to from wherever your coming from. We were upgraded to a superior room which are very modern with excellent beds and a clean, contemporary bathroom with rather nice complimentary toiletries. Check in was very quick by friendly, courteous staff and we were in our room within five minutes.

The swimming pool and changing facilities are very good, although I should imagine that this could get a bit crowded over the weekend.

Breakfast wasn't included in our package and was very good but ridiculously over priced.

We use Marriott hotels a lot due to their consistency and this was no exception.

Was abit disappointed with the standard of this marriott. The room we were given was small and curtain slightly derailing! Breakfast was ok, the presentation could have been done better.

You would need a car in order to get anywhere from the hotel.

  • Liked — they catered for babies
  • Disliked — small, boxy room with derailing curtains

My husband and I stayed for two nights as we were attending a funeral. We booked a deal that included breakfast. Our room was okay although the air-con didn't work. We had a lovely big bed. There was a rack for one suitcase but the second had to go on the floor thus crowding an already small area. The toiletries were lovely. Breakfast was super with an excellent buffet - a huge variety and choice. Service at breakfast was impeccable.
When the time came to check out, there was a mini-bar fee and four breakfasts charged to our account. We hadn't used anything in the mini-bar, and our breakfasts had been included in the original price. When I (politely) explained this to the young man at reception, he didn't believe us. He told us it didn't say "breakfast included" on the booking sheet and he intended charging us the extra. His attitude was such that I felt we were being harassed, and accused of being dishonest, although he didn't come right out and say so directly. He was obnoxious. He said he would be investigating more after we left and would phone to let us know how much extra he would charge us. We never heard from him, and we weren't charged any extra, but felt an apology would have been nice given that he was so rude and was wrong. His accusations were most unpleasant. So check your bill carefully.

We have stayed here before - three years ago and as we had to be in the area for a party booked in again. I agree with reviewers that the rooms are tired, though very clean. Our ac did not work and the toilet was difficult to flush. On the bright side the Chats bar was good and the staff therein were very good indeed. We discovered the AC did not work late and were not satisfied with the service. To be fair, the manager did take money off the bill and apologise, but it took the pleasure out the stay, Also the pool changing rooms were not very well looked after and of course Sunday morning, small pool very busy!

One of those visits but not representive I hope!

This hotel is a great choice if you are needing to stay in Swindon/surrouning area. We were attending the Farnborough Air Show and it was handy for the railway station to get us in to that area. The staff are wonderful so friendly, polite and helpful. We had three under 5s in our party- including a 10week old and the hotel was ideal. Great pool and leisure facilities and usual high standard marriott public spaces. Only slight niggle was that our room needed a bit of an update -but was spotlessly clean and plenty of space for our cot.

  • Liked — Superb staff
  • Disliked — Rooms needed updating in our case

We chose the Swindon Marriott for a weekend break because it isn't too far to travel and they were offering a great summer deal of £77 per room per night for bed and breakfast AND dinner on the first night.

We initially went via the hotel's website but then phoned up to double check on the room availability because we wanted a twin room with two doubles. The beds and pillows were very comfortable and there were decent sized towels in the bathroom which is unusual these days. There was a full sized bath to have a good soak in after a swim in the excellent pool.

The staff were very attentive and efficient throughout the hotel and we were made to feel like valued guests rather than a number throughout our stay.

If you are on a package including dinner you choose any starter, main course and dessert from the menu without any financial limit. You only pay extra for drinks and additional courses (if you have room).

Breakfast was excellent quality and quantity although better on the Saturday than the Sunday

The only criticism is the minibar in the room which registers a sale even if you just move something but when we pointed out the error it was quickly corrected. But check your bill carefully.

The location is good. You can walk into the Old Town in 15 minutes where there are plenty of good restaurants. I can thoroughly recommend an Italian restaurant called Il Capricorno which is the first restaurant you come to in the High Street on the left hand side. We had a good meal at a reasonable price.

Afterwards we went into the Bell Hotel next door where there was a live band playing.

If you want to walk into the modern town centre it's only about a mile and a half. I'd recommend visiting the GWR Steam exhibition mentioned by other reviewers which is about another 10 minutes walk from the town centre. This is next to a large Designer outlet if you're into that sort of thing. The town itself isn't anything to write home about although there are two theatres.

If you do as we did and leave your car in the hotel and walk into town and onto the Steam Museum there are frequent buses back to the hotel. (No 19 directly from the Steam museum).

There was a fire alert at about 10.30 on our first night. It was a genuine alert (although there wasn't actually a fire) and the staff handled it well making sure that as many people as possible were accounted for at the assembly point.

So, provided you can get a good deal, I would recommend the Marriott and indeed Swindon for a short break

Stayed there 3 nights for business reasons. I was first given a room for handicapped person, approximately 30% size less than a normal one, with a one-person bed, a joined door, special equipment in the bathroom etc. Needless to say, I came right back to the reception, requesting another one... which I got -it was close to midnight. While I appreciated the responsiveness of the staff, I would have much more appreciated getting the room I had booked right first time!!
Apart from that, service was OK, the bed was comfortable, bathroom was acceptable, breakfast was excellent although somewhat expensive. I tested the heated indoor pool as well, which I did not find in a great state of cleanliness.
One more thing: do avoid booking taxis through the direct line at front desk. I booked mine the day before I left in order to avoid waiting for too long. It never showed up though; and it was not until the 3rd call in the morning that I eventually got one. Almost missed the train...
