A good pub with comfortable accommodation. A little noisy in the evenings when busy but good atmosphere. Food good value, good selection of beers. Staff good. Great location in the Old Town, some on site car parking.

Visited on the weekend of the 27th of the July 2013.
On the plus side, food was very good and real value for money. The room itself was clean and fine.

On a negative the bathroom needs to be refurbished, it was worn out and the cold water tap continually dripped.

I spent one night at the Goddard Arms last night (June 18th 2013).
I was allocated Room 15, a single room with en-suite bathroom.
There was one bath towel, a hand towel and hand soap.
The room had a TV, hairdryer and one mug and spoon with a box of drink sachets and a packet of shortbread.
So far so good.

The bad points:

The staircase to the room was dirty.
The overall look of the pub is dated and shabby, with cracked walls, missing handrails and damp patches around the entire pub.
The room was very dusty on the headboard, shelf, above wardrobe and wardrobe shelf.
The carpet had not been vaccumed properly as debris and dust had accumalated around the edges.
There was a pungent smell of smelly feet and grime.
The room overlooked the kitchen and the boiler and air conditioning pipework visible and noisy.
At night the problems started.
As I lay in bed hoping to get a restful nights sleep, every 6 minutes a BANG and then the sound of something that could be described as a dishwasher or grinder would start up, sometimes lasting for several minutes.
It would stop then after 6 minutes it would start again and again and again.
This continued throughout the night.
I gave up at 6:45am and decided to have a shower. Trouble was I had to descale it first as it was nothing more than a trickle to start with!

After the shower, I went downstairs for breakfast that I had paid the extra £5.99 for.
The yoghurt was a choice of two flavours and had been placed in an icebucket.
The breakfast menu said that a regular breakfast was served with hash browns, beans, sausage and egg as well as toast and bacon.
There were no hash browns! There was no offer of an alternative.

I explained about the noise during the evening and nighttime and did get my money back for the evening, but it didn't stop me feeling absolutely shattered.

The staff are friendly and work hard, but the cleaner needs to use a vaccum and duster a little more often.
I had an evening meal that was acceptable, though greasy.

Overall if you have to stay somewhere at last minute and not for too long then this place would be suited.
But if you are going to spend the same amount of money and can look around I really suggest you do!

I have attached photos of the dust in the room and missing grout around bath.
It's the little things that make the stay more comfortable and this was definitley missing the little things.

Room Tip: Ask for a room either at the front of the pub or facing the garden. Rooms 10-18 should be avoided...

If you want value for money this is the place to go. Annoyingly there is no waitress service but food is basic but good and service is friendly.

They also do great full English breakfasts and roasts on Sundays.

I would never come here in the evening but great during the day with the family

I've been to the Goddard Arms a few times and I've never eaten there before. Yesterday, I decided to eat there with family. The food was excellent

After ordering our drink and food, we decided to sit near the bar. Not to close but close enough to watch the Swindon game on the TV next to the bar.

I would like to express that the bar staff and waitresses were excellent. They deserve praise.

The downside to our visit yesterday was the attitude of the duty manager. They had the Swindon game on both screens next to the bar but as soon as the (Swindon) game had started, he (the duty manager) decided to switch the game off. We asked nicely if he could put the game back on the TV we were sat next too but his response was "The Swindon game is not coming back on this TV, deal with it". You wouldn't speak to a dog in the manner he spoke to me and my family.

It wasn’t me or my family that had to deal with this person’s attitude. Another customer who went to the bar to order a drink had his head bitten off. Hell knows how many other customers had to deal with his appalling attitude.

We decided to leave as soon as we finished our meals due to the attitude of this manager. We didn’t want to spend more time listening to this manager biting off the heads of paying customers. We ended up going to another establishment within Old Town. His attitude spoilt, what would have been a great experience to “The Goddard Arm’s”

Again, I would like to express that the other bar staff and waitresses were excellent and they fully deserve praise.

Would like to thank the staff of the Goddard arms for a lovely one-night stay. Bed was comfortable and room was quiet despite looking on to the street. Was thrilled to be upgraded to a double room at no extra cost and enjoyed the extra space.

I am particularly indebted to them for providing me with breakfast even though I'd managed to sleep through it.

My only complaint is that the bathroom could have been in slightly better condition, but appreciate that this is a pub with rooms rather than a hotel per say, and for less than £50 per night including breakfast I can't complain too loudly!

This is a nice standard pub, good ale and food looked popular. Great service too. The rooms are small but have everything you need, clean and tidy too. WiFi is only available in the bar area, and the car park is a bit small if the hotel is full. A great location for the old town, and not too far from the main town centre and shops. From a business perspective if you are in the area for a night or two I'd recommend it, but if you are doing a long stay then there might be better options in the area. This is a nice pub/hotel - friendly and convenient. I'd stay again without a thought. Well done Goddard Staff...
The road outside the room was a bit noisey, and the rooms were very warm. No aircon.

Room Tip: Maybe try a room atthe back, it might be more quiet.
