“Afternoon tea very disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2013

Having booked in advance for afternoon tea, as per the instructions on the hotel's website, we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. The website requires one to "book at least 24 hours in advance as everything is made freshly". It didn't seem that way on our visit. The scones were dry and rubbery with a texture similar to that of stale part-baked ciabatta bread - I suspect something had gone wrong with the recipe; I've never had scones like this before. The pear tart presumably had a frangipane filling but it was very dry and there was no almond flavour. The pear had been poached in some sort of spiced liquid, the flavour of which was not to my taste. The cream was of the spray can variety rather than clotted or thick double. The jam was a bit congealed in the pot. The lemon cake had a good flavour but it was a bit dry. The sandwich fillings were uninspiring: ham and pickle, cheese and tomato, egg and cress on supermarket-style sliced bread. My coffee was luke warm when it arrived. Not what I've come to expect from the Pear Tree over the many years that I've been a regular customer. Let's hope dinner next week is better or I shall be looking for somewhere new for our next outing.

Having stayed and dined at the Pear Tree previously we expected a fantastic quality lunch and wines..........that was exactly what we received. The food was imaginative, well prepared and presented. The Winter menu venison and pheasant were excellent.

The staff were very attentive yet discrete so all in all the 14 people who sat down for lunch were well satisfied.

We have just returned home following another superb meal at The Pear Tree along with our friends.

The welcome received on arrival is always warm and friendly and sets the tone for the evening nicely, it is lovely to be shown to the lounge for pre-dinner drinks whilst considering the various options available for each course.

The chef is very accommodating and flexible in respect of menu choices, tonight for example allowing me to choose from the lunch menu during dinner service. The staff are very knowledgeable about the food available and are very discrete.

The hotel was tonight clearly very busy however this did not affect the service.

The food was fantastic, the bread was served warm and we somehow managed to eat each of the many courses in between conversation.

Our waiter upon noticing that I am a vegetarian quickly offered to replace the intermediary course of salmon for melon which I greatly appreciated.

It was a lovely visit and we really enjoyed introducing two of our friends to the Pear Tree for an elegant dinner, thank you to all of the staff for being so great at your jobs and for making the Pear Tree the special place that it is.

The Pear tree restaurant really is a bit of a treat for us. We live locally and have never had the need to stay in the hotel, but have long known that for a celebration, a family event or 'just' a great dining experience we can always rely on the Pear Tree.

Francis Young and his team have always added those extra touches to make important meals enjoyable and worry free, because you know in advance everything will be great.

We recently celebrated my wife's 'significant' birthday at the Pear Tree with a meal for our close friends. It was important to me that it would be an enjoyable event. I had no reason to worry, the table was beautifully presented, decorated with flowers and twinkling with candles. A personalised menu had even been produced for us. Everyone commented on the delicious food and how much they enjoyed being there. The table service was very courteous and attentive and helped make the evening a great success.

I have no hesitation in recommending the Pear Tree restaurant for that special occasion meal.

Yet again a fabulous meal served in great surroundings. The Pear Tree is a formal location yet you feel as if you are in a private house. Efficient but discreet service. Impressive menu chouices and all of the highest quality.

The title is taken from an e-mail we received – and that is what we did. The weather was so foul that outdoor excursions had to be limited, so we enjoyed the Library, the bar and the seating in our room. Our ground floor room, Marian Stevens, was large and comfortable, with a small but perfectly good bathroom. We stayed two nights.
We enjoyed two breakfasts (our cooked dishes appeared promptly) and two excellent evening meals, where, in spite of our good resolutions, we consumed the amuse bouches, the fish following the first course, and all three courses, trying different things. (Pace a previous comment, that was not because the portions were miniscule.) All were excellent: with each dish, the ingredients were not only complementary in flavour but there was also a contrast in texture.
The service was excellent, friendly and helpful and by no means intrusive. The owners are active – and have a wealth of experience – and it shows. But we did comment that the cleaning of our room could have been more thorough.

We hope to return.

Just come back from a short break. Helpful, friendly staff, very quiet location and comfortable lounge. We had an executive room which was a good size and comfortable but the bathroom needs updating as does much of the hotel. There's a feeling that some TLC would not go amiss. There are two metal external staircases, painted white but covered in mould & moss and they really give a very poor impression of the managements attitude to maintenance. Food varied considerably from miniscule portions but with strong flavours, through bland and boring to very good. The breakfasts are prepared to order and good WHEN they arrive but give yourself plenty of time, half hour wait for a bowl of porridge is rediculous although it was good when it arrived The buffet part of breakfast is minimal with no fresh fruit. We felt it was way too expensive for what we got
