Family run hotel, part of the "Pride of Britain" independent marketing group - Anne & Francis Young have a wealth of experience around the world and it shows. We were returning for our 4th stay over several years. Lovely individually designed, named rooms, spacious and well appointed (and they do now have tea and coffee making facilities, see previous reviews, as well as sherry, complimentary bottled water and home baked shortbread). Public rooms plush and welcoming, grounds are delightful (too icy to explore this time) and Francis is growing vines to make his own wine soon.

Only one gripe - the spa bath and hand held shower in our room (Maria Williams) were fine, but the overhead shower was never more than lukewarm - a previous reviewer has made the same observation - odd; and the heating system was bizarre, we had to set the thermostat at 25 degrees to get the room even remotely warm but the bed was very comfy and my requested non-allergenic pillows were already in place (a rarity!).

Food is generally very good, although as we stayed 3 nights, a little variety in the menu would have been nice (it stayed identical throughout - not even a special to ring the changes). The restaurant is a large conservatory, in two halves, at the rear of the hotel - in Jan/Feb this was very cold and it would have been nice to have the heaters on BEFORE the guests arrived and shivered. We wore warmer clothes the second night! Best dishes? - stilton cheesecake or trout rillettes as starter; salmon and scallop rosette or sirloin steak for main.

Not cheap, but look on their website and there are often special 2 or 3 night DB&B deals which make it more affordable. (We got 3 nights DB&B at £507 for 2 including half a bottle of champagne - although you need to budget £20-£30 a bottle at least for wine, plus drinks and coffees - our full bill came to £649)

A lovely venue for a family celebration, or a special break for two (and close to Swindon with its amazing Steam Museum and designer shopping outlet, on the site of the old GWR works).

Me and my boyfriend have visited the Pear tree at least six times in the last year and have additionally stayed there twice, even though we only live twenty minutes away.
The food is always completely gorgeous, so much choice and variety if often takes us a very long time to choose our food. Having eaten there six times and each time had four courses and having shared each plate of food with my boyfriend it means that I have tried nearly fifty pear tree meals and I am yet to try something I haven’t loved!

On arrival you sit in the lounge and eat canapés whilst choosing your meal, once chosen you go into the restaurant which overlooks the beautiful gardens and have your three courses, this isn’t counting the delicious warm breads and palette cleansers you eat between your starter and the main! The meat is always cooked beautifully with lovely sauces and there is always an extensive vegetarian and fish option. Me and my boyfriend both work in a Michelin star restaurant and the pear tree’s standard of food is certainly not far off. We always have dessert and cheese and then have coffees in the lounge which always come with gorgeous little brownies and Turkish delight, which makes it impossible to turn down coffee, no matter how full you are!!!

If you stay the night then the breakfast is to die for… Definitely the cooked breakfast!

The dress code is formal and my only criticism is of some of the guests that stay there, being only eighteen I often wear a dress and heels and too many times have I had to endear jealous, bitter old women make comments about what I am wearing. I completely ignore them but on a couple of occasions they have left me feeling slightly self conscious, however, next time a comment is made they will be receiving a comment that really will make them gasp so ignore them ladies… The pear tree is definitely not a place to wear jeans!

We spent a week-end at The Pear Tree as part of a family party. I cannot say enough good things about our experience.

Our room was delightful - spacious, nicely furnished, comfortable bed and well-appointed bathroom with a good shower (much appreciated after a series of poor hotel showers). The complementary sherry, biscuits and apples were very welcome.

The food was delicious. The full English breakfast, with flakey croissants, was a wonderful way to start the day. The lunches and dinners were of a very high gourmet standard, and the lounge supper was perfect after a big day of eating.

All the common rooms are nicely appointed. We especially appreciated the library, where we spent a delightful Sunday evening playing Scrabble. Also the gardens were a lovely place to take a leisurely stroll.

My wife and I and, I believe, all the family, would heartily recommend The Pear Tree to all and sundry. We certainly hope that we shall be able to return before too long.

Our large family group stayed at the Pear Tree last weekend, and enjoyed the experience of a lifetime. Every effort was made to welcome us and meet our every need. The rooms were delightful, the food excellent, the gardens a joy. All our requests were met with graciousness, and there was no pressure to keep to timetables. Our ages varied from 6 months to mid 70s, and we all had a wonderful time. Frances and Anne were lovely hosts, and all the staff were delightful.
This is certainly a place for a very special occasion.

My wife and I have enjoyed weekends at the Peartree for the last 5 – 6 years and it never fails to come up to the highest standards. This year we chose it to celebrate our Silver Wedding anniversary and things were once again perfect.
The hotel is only 10 minutes from the M4 and is perfectly placed for the Cotswold’s. Located on a quiet road on the edge of the village the building itself is very impressive and the gardens are delightful. The lounge is tastefully decorated and the conservatory restaurant is a joy to eat in during either summer or winter.
We have only stayed in superior rooms so I can’t comment on the standard rooms but the superiors are excellent with wonderful spa baths. The hotel has also recently placed tea trays in the room which you used to have to call reception for.
I have only ever encountered excellent staff at the Peartree but the greatest praise must be reserved for dinner. Not only is the set menu very good value the food is exceptional quality. There is plenty of choice, not a supplement in sight and I doubt you will see a better cheese board anyway.
All in all this is our favorite hotel and in my view is also excellent value for money.

We stayed here on the recommendation of a friend and we weren't disappointed. It's very much a country hotel but they don't overdo the chintz. We had a lovely large room (executive with a HUGE bed) and there was a little outside space for the pups to enjoy. We enjoy travelling with our dogs and it's nice when a hotel isn't just pet friendly but really enjoys having the dogs around. There are lovely grounds to walk around in and enjoy and these are well lit during the evening.

Value for money is excellent, we paid £209 for dinner, bed and breakfast. Dinner was 4-courses and we were allowed this in our room so we could stay with the dogs (this is a nice touch as a lot of hotels make you order off the limited room service menu). The meal was very good. I was a tiny bit disappointed with my main of calves liver (grainy) and my husband was very disappointed with his brulee (runny) but that was very minor overall.

We will certainly return again.
