Holiday Inn Express Swindon City Centre
Ranked #23 of 25 Hotels in Swindon
Reviewed 28 October 2011

The hotel is smart and clean, and the staff polite, but the double glazing is quite useless against outside traffice noise and worst still, allows really intrusive intercity train noise into the room from the railway 200 yards away. Not acceptable.

The internet package worked for about 1 hour. I then had to phone the IT support people (eastern European) who insisted on attempting to re-configure my laptop - which had worked only a few hours before in a London hotel and subsequently worked fine when I got home. The call was escalated, but I was never called back. Every time I attempted to send emails from the Hotel's internet, my mail client stated an error (spamhaus alert) that showed the hotel's internet IP addresses were infected with a BOTNET virus. I got a refund on the Internet costs, but due to not being able to send emails made a 15 minute phone call to France which cost £16!!!! Which I felt was a consequential cost, but they would not refund it.

I made them very aware in reception that no call charges are displayed in the room or were mentioned to me when I asked for the call to be made by reception. This is the sort of thing that Offcom takes telecoms firms to task over time and again anf fines telecoms companies for.

I was able to use the internet later, but still was unable to send emails from my email client.

Finally they use very cheap, rough toilet paper and to top it all, there were no buscuits in the tea tray! Clearly I did not notice these last two things at the same time ;-)

Room ok size but felt old and tired with a main light not working. Good choice at breakfast. You have to pay for Internet, and car got broken into in reccomended car park. Will
go by train next time!

We (couple) stayed a Friday & Saturday night (23rd/24th Sept) and were pleased with the hotel and room overall on the Friday... but Saturday night was awful with ignorant guests causing problems until 02:30... the reception staff were called and tried to resolve the issue but without success... breakfasts are reasonably good although 'hot' choice is quite limited.
Staff are efficient and pleasant.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor and not facing on to Harding Street

We stayed in this hotel on a Saturday night as we were visiting friends in swindon and the hotel was centrally located and only £49 for the night.
There's no car park on site, though there is a multi-story, the brunel west car park, a 5 min walk away that the hotel will validate parking for. Make sure you pick the right car park though as there are 2 multi-story's on the same road, brunel west & north, and the hotel will only validate parking in one of them. It's the difference between £5 for a 24 hr stay and £38!
Lots of staff milling about reception chatting amongst themselves when we checked in. They weren't overly friendly but were pleasant enough for me.
One of the two elevators was out of order so sometimes it seemed quite a wait before one arrived.
The room itself wasn't massive but was big enough, seemed pretty new and everything was very clean & tidy. Breakfast was included in the price as well and was standard holiday inn fare.
My one issue was with noise levels outside as there are several late opening bars and clubs nearby and even with the window shut you can still hear their music well into the early hours of the morning. It didn't particularly bother me as I'm not a light sleeper, but I can see how it would if you were, particularly if like us you were staying on a weekend when I imagine the noise is at its worst.

After staying in a couple of Holiday Inn Express hotels, I can safely say that this is the best one so far. The rooms were comfy, very clean, they felt new. Location was great, close to the train station, city centre and Outlet shopping area. Breakfast was the usual HI offerings, sausage, scrabmled eggs, beans, toast, rolls, muffins etc, so could fill up at the beginning of the day. The night I stayed the TV weren't working, but as i booked in early they thought it was just mine so offered to move rooms, get a spare TV cable, the staff were very helpful. Turned out it was the whole building TV system that was down, and the free drink they offered didn't really make up for that, but these things happen. Overall, a good comfy stay.

Room Tip: location generally quiet, trains may be noisy on the north side.

This is below average for HI Express. The rooms were quite small and cramped, and the interior design was basic even by the usual standards of HI Express. We were travelling with a small child, so they pulled out the sofa bed. This left very little room to walk in the room. Also, there were numerous technical flaws. The room was too hot because the thermostat was centrally controlled (they didn't allow the fan to be switched on). The bathroom lights above the mirror didn't work. Even the lights in the lift (elevator) were off, giving you the weird sensation of using a dark lift where you couldn't see the buttons. Also, the room had very few electrical outlets. The main bed was comfortable, but the pull-out bed had an appallingly thin mattress where you can feel the springs. On the plus side, the TV was quite nice (although it had few channels), the staff were quite friendly, and it's in a very central location. It's located in the centre of Swindon, right beside a high concentration of (somewhat trashy looking) nightclubs. In the daytime, you are right beside extensive shopping facilities. Breakfast was of standard quality. Parking is not free. You need to drive to a car park where you pay a discounted fee upon departure (the hotel desk staff need to validate the ticket before you go). All in all, I felt like I was staying in a cheap plastic fortress where I didn't get a good night's sleep. This might be good for a single person passing through (especially if you want to go clubbing in Swindon), but it's not great for families.

I hadn't booked this hotel, but had checked it out the night before, we just hoped they had a twin room when we arrived,by midnight i was wishing they didnt have a spare room. the room was fine except the aircon didnt work, I think they turn them off at night.
Settled down to sleep and then it started , thursday nights are student nights at the Sin nightclub just below the room, i had to shut the window to keep the noise out (didnt work)
music goes till 3am, when i rang and complained they found another room with a bed and a fold away, but i would need to move all the luggage and wake my sister who had finally slept with ear plugs, i finally got 3 hours sleep , and then had to fly 23 hours to australia. we were not advised when we booked the room and the night club is a regular occurance'
