“excellent food, and service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2012

I discovered this amazing restraunt via a friend at work who raved about the coffee and food. I lived near to the place last year and often ate there with my girlfriends. On average now we eat there twice a month so what makes us go back again and again? Great food, two course meal for ten pounds. Huge menu from burgers, the lamb one is awesome, to warm goats cheese salad, and steaks that melt in your mouth, mackenzies delivers first class food every time in an intimate setting ..great place to eat

“Used to be great, but it's gone downhill a lot lately”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2012

We've eaten at Mackenzies for years - usually brunch with friends - and it's always been great but over the past couple of months it's really gone downhill.

A few weeks ago four of us ordered together (one order, paid for together) and two of our dishes came out ok, but it was a full half hour before the other two dishes arrived. This meant our friends had finished their meals by the time ours had arrived and when they did arrive, they were luke warm and looked like they'd been sat around a while.

We thought maybe it was a one off so we went again more recently, but the quality of the food seems to have really deteriorated. It was all either over or under cooked and with seemingly poorer quality ingredients than what we're used to here.

They seem to have recruited quite a few new members of staff in recent times too, and it's never appropriate for customers to have to hear staff members derogatorily discussing other colleagues. Poor show.

“Disappointing lunch”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2012

Having eaten at Mackenzies several times in the past, today's lunch was a big disappointment. Being told they had no salmon fishcakes some 20 minutes after placing the order was one thing, but when everybody else's lunch turned up and mine did not, I was then told that they had forgotten me completely, as the original order was unavailable. The meatballs I finally received were not something I would want to experience again. Pork and beef meatballs in a tomato sauce with linguini does not immediately conjure up the idea that the overpowering taste is of coriander, or that the meatballs will contain sultanas. Most unpleasant. For dessert, 3 of the party ordered: spotted dick with cream; chocolate fudge cake with ice cream; and a portion of vanilla ice cream. These took almost 40 minutes to arrive, with the excuse offered that "the chef was very busy, and was still dealing with the first courses". If it takes a trained chef to stick a pre-made spotted dick in the microwave, cut a slice of chocolate cake, or scoop out a portion of vanilla ice-cream, that's the first I have heard of it. Mackenzies, I will not be visiting again in the forseeable future. If you don't have enough staff to cope with the number of tables available, either hire more staff or don't accept the orders.
