“Good golf break!”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

We've just enjoyed a weekend golf break at the Cottesmore! Six of us arrived on the Saturday and played the Griffin course which was a good challenge, with a good variety of holes, many with some interesting water hazards. Our package included a three course dinner on Saturday night, which was enjoyed by all. The service provided by the staff was attentive and we were well looked after.

On Sunday morning, we enjoyed a good breakfast before heading out onto the Phoenix course. Again, this offered a good challenge and was a great end to our weekend competition. We were also very lucky to enjoy some great weather for October!

We had three twin rooms which were all clean and presentable. Our bathroom could have benefitted from some more up to date fittings (especially the shower) and as others have mentioned, some more generous towels. However, for the money we paid for the weekend package, we really couldn't fault it.

I stayed here as I was working nearby. The room was clean and comfortable, alas with not internet connection (except in the bar). Breakfast was good.
The gym and pool was excellent. The golf course looked awesome, unfortunately I did not have the time to use it!
It was in a nice quiet location.

Stayed for a wedding which was organised very well so nothing negative to write about that, but the accomodation is poor, for the amount being charged. It is not acceptable, the rooms are basic for example hairdryer didnt work bathroom shabby carpet stained long life milk for coffee had gone off! door closer had recently been oiled , consequently oil stain all down the door. Room had a bronze pontins chalet about it, rooms are so basic compared to the overall venue. Looked at reveiws after my stay and a common theme was the shabby tired rooms, come on Cottesmore time to revamp them or put down your room rates seriously.

Room Tip: Unless its for golf or a wedding book somewhere else

Two pretty fair golf courses but spoilt by poor accommodation. The rooms are very tired with shabby bathrooms. The towels provided are like large hand towels. The food at dinner was overcooked and rubbery despite being ordered in advance. I would not recommend this and won't be going back.

Went here for the golf really, didn't expect too much.
Rooms are pretty basic but ok, had a ground floor overlooking the first tee and putting green,
It was fairly clean but does need a major revamp.
The bar area was good on the first floor overlooking the 18th green, bar lady was friendly and jovial.
Breakfast was ok, the pool area was ok, with a steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi, and a small gym.
all in all it was great value as a golf package, but could do with a makeover.

Our group of nine, mixed handicap ladies had a good time at Cottesmore. We go away for a couple of nights every year and try to go somewhere different each time. We played the Griffin course twice and then Phoenix on the last day. Griffin is the longer and probably more difficult; Phoenix is much shorter ( but some pretty long walks from green to tee). Both are very scenic with some magnificent ancient trees. The greens are not in very good condition and it must be said that both courses are a bit scruffy and in need of quite a lot of tlc. Bunkers are unraked and unkempt. Having said that there were some good holes. On the Griffin the 17th over water to a difficult sloped green was certainly a good challenge. Several of the par 3s on the Phoenix were also quite tricky even if short. Attention needs to be paid to some trees and shrubs. There needs to be severe cutting back in places.

The hotel likewise is definitely 3 star. The rooms are quirky. Mine, no 3 was a family room with a double and a single, a huge amount of hanging and storage space, a big bathroom (with balcony) and a separate toilet - nothing to complain about but like the course, generally in need of tlc.

The food was of a very high standard with two creative dinner menus and exceptionally good service by our waitresses. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order. All staff, from hotel manager, Lorraine, golf director Callum and catering staff were
efficient and helpful.

I understand that the owners have just taken back the management after 15 years of leasing out and that they intend to invest in refurbishment so some of the points above are likely to be addressed.

All in all it was good value holiday golf. (And the wall to wall sunshine we enjoyed certainly enhanced our experience!)
