“A really pleasant surprise”
Reviewed 28 December 2013

We had had a long and tiring day when we arrived at Gatwick and the night in this hotel was a present from our son and his partner and when we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff, shown to a huge room and we collapsed gratefully into what may be the comfiest hotel bed ever! This hotel is starting to show its age but is none the worse for it - it is clean if a little scuffed. Breakfast was a bit of a nightmare, though, with a booming echo in the dining room and inefficient staff - we were constantly 'buzzed' by a waitress who seemed to think we were burglars intent on getting free food, but this was down to lack of communication really and in the end we got a bit giggly. We will use this hotel again, but for breakfast will rely on the freebie coffee in the room!

The hotel is reasonably well appointed and conveniently situated for Gatwick Airport. Reception is well managed and formalities easily achieved. Once you've settled in, Your car is taken by the hotel to secure storage pending your return to the UK. However, there is No porter service so you have to carry your luggage to your room. It was pouring with rain and we requested an umbrella so we could collect our luggage. Umbrellas were not provided!!!
The Rooms are of adequate size, reasonably furnished and have the usual tea and coffee making facility. A bottle of water is available but you will be charged £3:50 if you dare drink it! There is no free wifi. Two options are available for access to wifi in your room. £4:99 for one hour or £12:99 for 24 hours but the charge only allows you to operate one device (frankly wifi should be freely available at all hotels). A TV is installed and most channels are available. The usual adult channel is available at an extra cost.
The restaurant is pricey. Drinks are expensive. The service is good but the quality of the food is well below par. If you are going to charge top prices the food should be delivered properly cooked and the sauces and side dishes flavoursome. Sadly that was not the case. The sauce for the chicken was wishy washy, the vegetables hidden and the chicken insipid and lacking both flair and imagination in its presentation. We sent that back. At £9:50 The cheese board was understated. There were not enough biscuits (6) and when we requested additional biscuits we were charged an extra £3:00. Between 3 of us, One bottle of Villa Maria white wine, 7 g&t's, 2 main courses and 1 cheeseboard - Total bill £155.00. Exorbitant and definitely not worth it. Recommend finding somewhere else to drink and eat.

My husband and I have stayed here twice once in February and once in November. We have booked the hotel for the night before we fly and then parking whilst on holiday. This hotel is really nice and both visits have been excellent value for money.
The rooms are spacious and clean. The south terminal is within walking distance which we have tested both stays the evening before departure. On the morning with luggage however we have gotten the bus. It's £3 each and well worth it as both our trips have been cold times of year!
One thing we did the last time in November was pay £16.95 to have our car delivered to us on our arrival back at Gatwick. This was well worth the money. Returning to the uk in December after being to Mexico was a slight climate change, so having the car delivered, de-iced and warm was amazing.
Would definitely stay at this hotel for a third time when flying from gatwick.

what a difference ( to the last Marriott we stayed in) we had an over night stay at this hotel and it was a delightful experience. Our room was Quiet, warm, clean, tidy and welcoming for which we were very grateful as we had been in a 6 hour traffic jam. The staff were helpful and the hotel gave off a happy feeling not sterile as at some airport hotels. This hotel was a deal we purchased (unlike the last Marriott where we paid full price) and we were very happy with the service, the room and the location. We had a snack in the bar, which was served quickly and was presented well on the plate. The bar area was welcoming and warm, the staff were helpful. All in all this hotel was good value for the money we paid, Thank you

Stayed at Courtyard at Gatwick twice recently prior to early flights. A reasonable flat walk from South Terminal (or there is a bus every 20 minutes). Polite, courteous checkin. Pre booked room was as requested. Room was good size, comfortable bed, everything worked in the bathroom and was spotlessly clean. We thought this hotel was good value and very convenient to the airport. Recommend to other travellers using Gatwick.

This has good points, which mean that we shall come again. But reluctantly . . .

Positive 1: The major positive is the situation: just 8 minutes on foot along a good path, pulling a heavy suitcase, to reach the South Terminal, and thence on the shuttle to the North

TIP: Don't bother with the £3 a head bus to get to or from the North Terminal - the bus-stop is a 6 minute walk away from the terminal entrance.

Positive 2: The other positive is the parking included in the room price.

TIP: take a photo of your mileage on your car before you check in at the parking desk - and TELL THEM that you have. :-)

The room was clean with an enormous bed and good-sized towels, and the shower was spacious and with strong water pressure. No towel rail near the wash basin however was slightly inconvenient. There were tea/coffee making facilities in the room, and an iron and ironing board. Good toiletries, but only one soap and no shower gel, so you had to get out of the shower to retrieve the soap from the wash basin.

The flush button on the lavatory was broken, i.e. completely missing. You had to poke your finger inside the hole to work the mechanism.

The air-conditioning was extremely noisy, keeping us awake.

But overall, the convenient location swings it for us.

But, Boy, do they try to grind the money out of you!

We had pre-paid our night's stay, but on arrival we had to fill in a £50 pre-authorisation slip on a credit card before they would let us check in. "In case there are any extras". We did so under protest.

On arrival in the room there was a bottle of water (but no glass with it), with a little note saying that we would be charged £3.50 for this "unless you inform Reception on check-out that you have not drunk it".

Isn't this inertia selling? Isn't inertia selling frowned upon if not actually illegal? How many people leaving early in the morning and rushing to check in at the terminals forget to tell Reception that they didn't drink the water? And have it taken from their £50 pre-authorisation?

:-(

But the big thing was the wifi charge.

£4.99 for an hour. Per person and per device. :-((

So two of you, each with a smartphone and a tablet would be forking out £20.

Charging for wifi is something that most hotels nowadays don't do. They don't charge you for using the television or the shower either.

£4.99 for an hour on your smartphone is just outrageous.

Marriott - do something about this!

Easy to find and in walking distance of South Terminal this hotel gave us a good start to our trip. The room was comfortable and clean, and the public areas, including the bar and restaurant are spacious and modern. We'll definitely use it again.
