“Tired and desperately needing refurb”
Reviewed 13 December 2013 via mobile

Arrived at this hotel trying to find a parking space where car park looks like a building site. The hotel itself is tired and desperately needs attention. The odour in the corridors is horrid. The room was ok'ish. The wallpaper was dirty and very old and was supposed to have a crinkle effect but just looked torn! Very dated and not a nice atmosphere foot family's. On the plus side the man who put a cot in our room for the baby was pleasant and helped us put it up. The reception staff were not very smiley or friendly. We find that a lot in the UK! Equally we arrived and left in the dark but you don't need day light to smell unpleasant odours! This hotel is obviously well used but the company needs to invest in cleanliness and decor but they know they have a captive audience for people going to Gatwick. I would not stay here again, with the children especially, I'd rather pay more for a more modern and cleaner hotel. Europa, you need to modernise or you will continually get negative reviews!

This is not high class but comfortable for a stay. Our room was clean but a bit tired with a mattress that had seen better days.
Breakfast was a good way to start the day with a full English Breakfast available
Unfortunately car parking is at a premium due to cars being left as long stay parking for travellers.
This meant tramping through muddy car parks in rain after finding a carpark away from the building.

Room Tip: No particular tip for rooms but this is a very busy hotel and parking is at a premium.

Stayed at this hotel on 3 separate occasions. Firstly back in April and then most recent the last few weeks. The hotel is very good value but it comes with a price, do not leave your vehicle here. My van has been broken into twice and my friend had the exhaust stolen off his van.have been informed by the staff this has happened a lot recently. Even a couple leaving their car here and on returning from their holiday having no number plates. I haven't any negative to say about the hotel in general just advise you not to leave your vehicle here especially a work van..

We are sorry that your van has been a target for thieves on more than one occasion. We have improved our camera system in an effort to reduce recurrence.

I wished I had checked the reviews before booking but this hotel was booked the night before, primarily due to its location for my meeting the following day.
I should have been alerted to the fact that the rate seemed too good to be true and indeed it was.
On arrival at the hotel if you are travelling by car, you cannot park outside the drop off area if you wanted to check in and take luggage to your room.
I had booked with Expedia but had chosen to pay at the hotel and incurred a credit card charge for payment which was not clear at the time of booking.
Although the pictures of the hotel look promising, it flattered to deceive and the hotel could do with a major refit.
If you have heavy luggage, you might want to request a ground floor room as there is no lift to the first floor (which is where the restaurant is located).
On arrival into the room, the smell (damp) was very strong and although the room was a reasonable size, it has to be the most disgusting and unclean room I have ever had to stay in (see pictures). Hair was in the bath, the shower curtain and mats had damp mold as did the ceiling. The shower knob did not appear to have been cleaned in months, with black gunge (I dread to think what it was) on the temperature dial.
Also, the bed sheets (although clean) looked well worn with holes in the sheet.
Whilst the TV worked (with occasional buzzing) the alarm on the TV did not.
Had a bar snack (bacon burger and chips) on the ground floor, which was also poor and had a very long wait before it was finally delivered.
Service by staff was mixed.
In short, although the rate paid was good it was not good enough! Avoid this hotel, especially if hygiene is important to you!

Room Tip: I would suggest avoiding hotel altogether but if you cannot, try and choose a ground floor room as t...

My wife and I stayed overnight at this hotel recently on our way from Australia to Portugal and found the hotel to be good value for money and the staff to be friendly and helpful.

Our Australian flight arrived in England early resulting in our arriving at the Europa very travel weary and way before the normal check in time. Arriving so early in the day we had expected to check in and then sit around for hours waiting for a room to be available. However, to our delight the friendly young woman at the desk checked us in and then provided us with our key for a room that we could occupy immediately.

After sitting in a jet for 22 hours, having a room made available to us makes us fans of the Europa forever.

Our room while of a slightly older style was pleasantly furnished, of suitable size and quite functional. Unfortunately the hotel does not turn the room heating on until 5 pm so one does have an incentive to leave ones room and move to the hotel lounge and sit in front of a rather small fire. Also, because we had an early flight to Portugal the next morning we were up at 3 am which appears to be before the hotel’s hot water heating cycle starts. Hence we had to settle for rather cold early morning showers in a room in which the days heating had not yet been turned on !!

We both had bar meals in the lounge which were large for the cost but rather lacking in taste. However, still good value and there is free wifi access available in the lounge.

For our trip from and back to Gatwick airport we used the Europa’s shuttle service which at five pounds return per person we thought to be of good value.

We have now stayed at the Europa about ten times over the last 9 years as we travel between Australia and Europe and will continue to use the Europa as we trip through the UK. It is a pity about the room and hot water heating cycles. However, as the room prices are very good I guess that one has to accept some sacrifices.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building and avoid the new annex

Certainly not the best Gatwick hotel but excellent value. Check the DBB+wine deal. Note the best deals may only be available from the hotel's own website. Can be very busy at times. The leisure centre cost an extra £5 but is very good.

Room Tip: Note that some first floor rooms are not accessible via the lift.

We stayed here for one night, on the spur of the moment. Our decision was influenced by the fact that we got a double room for £31, plus another £7 for two breakfasts. The check in process was smooth and, when we arrived in our room to find that it reeked of cigarettes (non-smoker room), we were immediately offered another room. Breakfast was the usual hot & cold buffet - the food was better than many other similar hotels have offered. Check out (having pre-paid the room online) took about 10 seconds.

The down sides were that the fittings were shabby, the bathroom had cracked and chipped tiles, with grout missing here and there, there was dust in many places, the curtains needed a good cleaning, one power socket was loose, and the bed was very very soft.

If we had paid the full £120 for this room, we would have been completely unimpressed.

Room Tip: We booked via Britannia's own website, on the same day, and got a substantial reduction.
