“Women of the night!”
Reviewed 20 October 2008

We booked in at the Europa because it was the cheapest in the area and we were only there to get our heads down for 5 or so hours. It was pouring down when we got there (not the hotel's fault) but the parking was chaotic, cars everywhere. First impression and introduction to the hotel was an obvious lady of the night talking loudly on her mobile outside – if this wasn't a lady of the night she needed a drastic make-over! Check in was fine and quick, but it was 1 o’clock in the morning. We were given a room on the ground floor just through the bar - this area wasn’t particularly nice, the carpet was very sticky. The room was on the ground floor and a decent enough size – I think it was a disabled room. The room’s décor was very dark and dated. The carpet had seen better days probably in the 80s. On the surface the room was clean but if you looked down the side of the bed it was pretty grubby. The bed was ok, sheets clean, but the counterpane and blanket were nasty so we pushed these off and therefore froze during the night. The bathroom was ok and the shower surprisingly good. Neither of us slept so got up pretty early and left. We didn’t book breakfast, so can’t comment on that. I suspect this hotel is a cash cow for the Britannia chain, due to the long-stay car parking but it really, really needs refurbishment. I wouldn’t stay there again and can’t recommend it. The reviews are pretty accurate. You have been warned.

Cleaner than we had feared having read earlier reviews. No phone in room which Reception could not understand as a concept. Couldn't order room service either via phone (I did not have one) or at Reception. Eventually got food at bar and took it to room. Early call ordered didn't happen - but again I suppose lack of phone was a problem. Staff all very pleasant but the service just didn't happen anywhere we tried to get it. Decor is from a bad dream.

Room cold on arrival at 2.30pm went to call reception but phone did not work. Went to reception and advised that heating did not come on till 5pm. I also requested an extra blanket which they said they would request from housekeeping. It never arrived. I also mentioned that matress was really hard and they offered to give us another room but on asking if that would improve the matress situation the very nice girl at reception smiled coyly and said they were all like that. If you get a cheap deal and are only staying one night then it is tolerable but we wont stay there again.

Read all the reviews but because i work in a 5 star hotel and know how 'tricky' and 'demanding' people can sometimes be, i chose to go here anyway.

Long flight, free bus took us to the Europa, fast check in,quick pint at the bar, room was clean and tidy, slept like a log.

Not really sure what people expect for a budget hotel. Had a great, hassle free nite and will be back...

We stayed at the above Hotel on the night of 09/08/08

We were allocated 2 rooms

Unfortunately both rooms were very tired i.e.

- Room One felt damp & smelt mouldy – We requested a change but were told there weren’t any other rooms available.

- The bathrooms had significant signs of mould around the bath

- The bed was uncomfortable and showed signs of needing repair

- Room Two - Wasn’t damp but again grouting in the bathroom appeared discoloured and mouldy

- The bedside lights did not work properly and the lampshades were not fixed correctly

- There was a large unpleasant stain on the chair in the bedroom

- Again the bed in this room was uncomfortable and showed signs of needing repair.

When we complained to reception we were told that there was nothing they could do, when we asked to see the duty manager we were told that the only thing we could do is to complain directly to Brittania.

When we complained to Brittania we were eventually referred back to the hotel - and offered an upgraded room at a special rate.

The only plus about the whole stay was that it was only for 1 night.

The hotel was dull, dark and had a distinctive musty smell about it in the corriders and bedroom. The bathroom in the first room we had, had a fair amount of black mould in it (even on the ceiling) and when the bed was sat on the leg gave way and the bed collasped. The second room was no better but the bed stayed put all night, it was a none smoking room that had a definate stale tobacco smell. The carvery was the evening food choice which offered vast amounts of food if you want it, but not much quality.
All in all a very poor hotel, we could have done much better with a B&B at a far lower cost.

Apart from the welcome which was okay, the rest of the stay went quickly down hill. First of all I had no plug for the bath and it took one hour for them to supply one. The bathroom was clean but had seen better days. The NON SMOKING room smelt of smoke and although they told me again and again that it was a non smoking room the staff could not explain why it had an ashtray. The bed was clean but the pillow cases were in side out. The worst was to come when I looked in the bed side cabinet to find a condom (unused), a cotton wool bud, an empty plastic bag and a lot of dust.
Breakfast was a shamble, the actual food was okay although a little over cooked. The staff were in hiding and it took me ages to find someonen to ask for tea cups only to be told they were in the dish washer and would take another 10 minutes.
Lunch was okay but nothing in comparison to other hotels I have stayed in.
The bar food menu was quite good and the food hot. Although trying to get a drink at the bar in the early evening was hard as it seemed to take two bar staff to prepare a cup of coffee for someone, leaving the rest of us around to wait to be served.
All in all, if this was the start to my holiday it would not be a great start. However, I was there on business and could not wait to get home and have a bath and wash that hotel away.
It says it all when you give your key back at the end of your stay to not even be asked if you enjoyed your stay.
