“Don't go here!”
Reviewed 30 April 2007

We picked this hotel because of its alleged transportation to/from Gatwick. We arrived, no transportation, and were told that transportation was only available in the evening. Entrance to hotel from taxi from scary looking rear of hotel, complete with dumpsters and a car wash. Taxi could not go to the front because of local market. Filthy carpets, no elevator, no help with luggage. Extremely old hotel, but also incredibly run down. Room OK.

We booked the hotel because of its location. We then read the comments on Tripadvisor and are glad to say our stay was very different to those written about on the site. Due to the snow our flight arrived in the early hours of the morning. We were greeted on our arrival at the hotel by a very pleasant member of staff who checked us in very quickly and in no time we were in our rooms. The rooms in the sussex wing were very clean and extremely comfortable. We ate continental breakfast in the hotel and this was very good. we would definately stay here again. Any staff we dealt with were helpful and pleasant. It was a very enjoyable weekend.

We arrived early evening, the man behind reception was most unhelpful, it was all he could do to tell us where our room was.

The carpets to the room were covered in builders dust, looked like they had not been cleaned in weeks. Builders still working in room next door at 1830hrs.

The room was a disgrace, wallpaper peeling from the walls, holes in the walls. Was supposed to be non smoking but had an ashtray in, stank of smoke.

Later on the fire alarm went off, no one seemed to know what to do. No one appeared to be in charge or know what to do!!!

DO NOT STAY AT THIS FILTHY< UNFRIENDLY HOTEL

We had reservation for two rooms. One of our rooms was in the middle of a construction project in the adjacent building. Construction debris littered the stairway and hall. We took one look at the stained carpet in the room and decided to leave. It was 3 PM in the afternoon, we were tired from a long overseas flight but there was no way we would sleep in this place.
The person at the reception was not helpful to say the least. We left. Beware! A few weeks later our credit card was billed. The credit card company credited our account after we explained the circumstances and misrepresentation. A few month later we were billed again with a slightly different amount and different date. Again, we straightened things out with the credit company and received a credit.
A few month later a new charge and date. We had to change our credit card number to stop further aggravation.
The worst Hotel experience in 40 years of travel.

When we read the reviews after booking this hotel, I have to say I was genuinely dreading staying there. But we were very pleasantly surprised. found a parking space n the hotel car park first time, booked in at reception was given a room in the sussex wing which was lovely. The bed was comfy, room was clean & the staff were very friendly.
We didnt eat at the hotel, but when we arrived back asked for a wake up call & we asked to book a taxi to the airport. They said that they supplied free of charge, which was a welcome surprise.
Breakfast was lovely. I am fussy about my food (especially if it has been sitting there a while)So I try to take meals within half hour of the restuarant opening.
I have to say I cannot fault the service that we recieved at the George hotel & would stay there again if flying from gatwick

The George Hotel provides clean rooms with all the amenities. TV, trouser press, tea and coffee facilities as well as a breakfast delivered to you room. All at a fair price.
The room we had was in a building behind the old part and was probably built in the 1960's. No lift, and generally looking a bit tired.
Our only problem was misinformation about the 'complementary taxi service' to and from Gatwick Airport.
The receptionist confirmed the fare as 6.50, as advertised, but the taxi driver (and the taxi control) knew nothing of this arrangement saying they paid a 1.50 levy to the hotel for the booking.
It only makes a few pounds difference on the fare, but smacks of false representation.
On a more positive note there is a good real ale bar and a proper feel to the pub side of the business.

We stupidly booked the hotel first, and THEN went on trip advisor getting the shock of our lives at how bad the majority of the reviews were!!! We were not looking forward to our stay there, even though it was only for one night.

Needless to say, when we got there we were directed (by a miserable Australian so and so on reception) to our room - in the building in the car park which had such bad reviews - and were dreading the worst when we opened the door. But to our surprise the room wasn't particularly bad! It was spacious and clean. The bathroom was clean and everything functioned properly.

The carpet was definitely in need of either a good steam-clean or replacement though, that's for sure. The bed was rubbish too - far too soft, not supportive at all and you could feel the springs dig in your back :-(

Breakfast was delicious and had everything you could want, and the guy serving us was very polite and worked hard.

All in all, the place was ok for a one night stopover and we didn't really have too much to complain about for the sake of 60 quid. But i don't think we would have liked to stay for more than one or two nights.
