“Decent hotel 40 mins by train to Victoria”
Reviewed 4 February 2014

A decent hotel, large rooms, good size beds and large flat screen tv.

The hotel has a reasonable gym with sauna and steam room, but lacks a pool. It's well enough equipped for a hotel gym, but staff seemed pretty disinterested.

Food in the restaurant was very good indeed, the set menu was really enjoyable, but the service let the hotel down. It was late when I arrived and I was one of the last to order in the Grill restaurant and it felt like the staff couldn't wait for the shift to end.

The hotel offers free internet, but it is so slow it is next to useless and I wouldn't pay to upgrade for the 'premium service'. In the end I switched to tethering off my 3G phone, as it was much faster. If hotels advertise free wifi, it should be at least faster than a mobile phone connection.

There are a good range of hospitality options though, with the Grill, a pub and a coffee shop, plus a shop selling essentials, which is useful if arriving late.

Overall the hotel is 'good' rather than ''very good'. It's certainly above average and good value so close to the train links to London (there is even direct access to the platforms from the hotel).

I'd certainly recommend for anyone travelling from Gatwick as an overnight.

Room Tip: I had a room overlooking the atrium and it was very quiet.

Doesn't quite hit the excellent category but nonetheless pretty good.

A good town-centre location but some way away from Gatwick Airport if staying there pre or post flight.

My room was clean, comfortable but perhaps edging on side of being a liitle dated. No real concerns though as only staying overnight for the one night.

On the whole staff were accommodating and pleasant, however, reception staff did differ considerably between check-in (excellent) and check-out (average).

All in all I would definately recommend the Arora, possibly not the top of my list for Gatwick hotels but there or thereabouts.

The hotel is nicely presented and the staff were friendly nothing to complain about in terms of the room all very nice and comfy. However Getting to the airport and back was more difficult than I had been led to believe. Going skiing meant we had several larger bags so we decided not to lug our bags via the train and then the mono rail to the North terminal. Instead we had to wait and catch the Shuttle bus all was ok ish going out, for our return transfer we were instructed to report to the Sofitel reception at the airport they would then let the bus know we were ready for collection. However this was not the case and even though the bus was supposed to be running we were told that the bus was not available that day! The hotel then arranged for a taxi but forgot to mention our ski bags so the taxi that arrived was not big enough!

It is easy to see why this hotel is always full of airline crews. It seems to have been purpose-built for them. Close to Gatwick Airport and alongside Crawley railway station, with Crawley Shopping Centre within close walking distance. The rooms are well sound-proofed, and there are 'do not disturb red lights that can be activated outside in the corridor from the room, if you want to sleep at any time of the day. The quietest rooms face inwards to the atrium. The spacious rooms have everything that could be needed including tea/coffee, safe, iron, and board with trouser press. The reception staff are very welcoming. There is adequate free parking, and the choice of hot or cold food at breakfast was excellent. There is a nice choice of food for dinner in the restaurant, plus a nice bar, or room service if preferred. I shall come here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing inwards with an atrium view

I’ve stayed at the Arora many times since my first review, so perhaps familiarity breeds contempt? Its still a comfortable hotel with nice rooms and lovely modern bathrooms (see my previous review for room details). Service at reception is variable depending on the staff member, can be non-existent at the bar although has improved no end at the restaurant – unfortunately it doesn’t make up for the quality of the food. Housekeeping staff are happy to provide a separate iron and board if you don’t get on with the one in your room, but bring your own multi-socket extension lead. But I always struggle to drag my case up the stairs from the car park, so would highly recommend dropping it off at ground level first before driving back to the car park.

During a stay one December day the heating had given up and chilly doesn’t begin to describe the room; when I last stayed in the autumn a boiler problem ensured a freezing cold shower which woke me up, to put it kindly! It’s a nice hotel to stay at if a stopover for Gatwick is necessary, but its within 75 miles of home so I am always tempted to get in the car and keep on driving. Perhaps a this is a reflection of preferring my own bed than staying away from home? Its still better than the average hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is courtyard side, with an external view. Otherwise you could end up on the grou...

We arrived at the hotel late in the evening, checked in and freshened up before heading down for a bite to eat, we chose the restaurant and had a good meal even though my husbands pet hate was encountered - why do they randomly add extras to your meal but not mention it on the menu, especially if that item/items are not to your liking!!!! Room was fine, reasonably good sleep before buffet breakfast which was good and then checked out but we were able to leave our luggage at the hotel till we returned to use their shuttle to the airport for our flight home. Would definitely stay at this hotel again for the same thing or longer.

It's a good hotel for a business stay.

The rooms are a little dated are of a good standard. The TVs are all fairly new saumsung LCD units so you can plug USB devices in and watch movies. The pillows and duvet feel very flat and seemed to be very dusty but otherwise the bed is comfortable.
The bathroom is great, decent sized shower with plenty of flow and steady temperature. There is also a separate bath.

The food is very expensive and of average quality. It's quite easy to spend £35 per person before even considering drinks (£4.80 for a pint of Guinness).
The alternative is to walk into Crawley which is pretty rough and lacks much other than average Italian restaurants and a couple of sketchy curry houses.

The staff are great here. There's plenty of staff around and they will go out of their way to help. The management also get involved rather than delegate so if you have any problems they will sort them out as a priority.

The leisure facility is great considering the standard of the average hotel gym. It was a little busy when I visited but that was at the peak.
There is a large room with cardio machines (bike, treadmill and cross-trainer) and an assortment of the standard gym machines (smith, leg curl, leg press, leg extension, upright row, opposing cables, shoulder press and chest press). The free weights in the main room only go up to 25kg but it keeps the less enthusiastic users from clogging up the alternative room.
There is a second room which caters more for enthusiasts which sets the gym apart from other hotel offerings in the area. This room contains an Olympic bench, squat rack, preacher bench and a rack of free weights going up to 50kg.

As an overall package this hotel is 4/5 but due to the poor bedding and expensive food I would put the local Premier Inn ahead in terms of comfort and value. The rooms in the Premier Inn were very modern, had high quality bedding and food was of similar quality but half the price.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the west wing if you want to avoid train noise.

We are disappointed to hear that you found our restaurant to be too highly priced, we hope that on a future stay you may like to try our Table D’hôte menu at £19.95 for two course or £22.95 for three-courses.

We hope to be able to welcome you back to the hotel on a future stay.
