“Excellent rural country pub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

What a good country pub serving exceptional modern food in an Idyllic setting, with the some of the best reservoir countryside walks in Lancashire on the doorstep.
Myself, the wife and Poppy the chocolate lab caught the train from Bromley Cross to Entwistle and its only £3.80 return for all of us . (or £4.50 one way ???) This trip only takes 6 minutes. Into the dog friendly country pub with open fires for a bite to eat and a couple of swiftys . I had pan fried Wood Pigeon @£10 and it was to die for. Masterchef eat your heart out. The wife had the fish and also said it was divine.
Service was efficient and friendly.
Then the walk back to Harwood is only 50 minutes skirting around the edges of the Entwistle, Wayho and the Jumbles reservoirs .

“Great location and good food”

We often walk the dog around the reservoir and then call in here for a meal. Dogs are welcome, flag floors, roaring fires and a warm welcome.

“Excellent food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2012

I was really pleased with the Strawberry Duck; the accommodation was excellent and the food well above the standard had expected at a very reasonable price. Staff are friendly too.

“overpriced salty food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2012

We visited here after having it recommended to us. What a disappointment! There was one member of bar staff on and the orders for coffee's and alcohol were building up - making for an unecessary wait for drinks. The food was extremely salty and no warmer than tepid!! Don't waste your time and money visiting this establishment. It is overpriced for mediocre food!

“Keeping a high standard”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2012

The Duck compares well with Nigel Haworths Ribble Valley Inns and has the advantage of cosiness. With 2 little girls, 2 teenagers and 4 adults on a snowy Sunday tea time we were well looked after by ALL the staff. The menu was well complimented by the specials board. The wild mushroom soup tasty and piping hot. Our party had 2 vegetarians who had no complaints, my wife went for the shoulder of lamb with "an exquisite pressed garlic mash". I was knocked out by the smoked haddock/ poached egg/ spinach ensemble. A king of kedgeree this one. Enough to send compliments through to the chef.
The desserts saw us all trying each others! Here I had some criticism. At over £5 each these need to be exceptional but they were all fairly ordinary. The sticky toffee pudding a little dry and coarse. The bake well tart, nice to look at but a little dry again and light on jam, and the taste of almonds hard to discern. The price of the desserts invites the above criticism. If more reasonably priced at say £3 50p then these average sweets would be ok.
The wine list like many has too many Chardonnays but that seems to suit most punters. The pricing here is good .
The atmosphere and decor is spot on for the location.
In conclusion this is a good inn. An inn being more than a pub. The main courses are excellent and that smoked haddock was a work of genius!
