“Cold Cider-Warm Welcome”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2014

My favorite Bolton pub. I have a deep aversion to chavs and the scythe is one of a handful of town centre pubs you can successfully avoid them on a weekend night. They have a good selection of ciders and a really good range of spirits. Friday and Saturday nights are very very busy, not for the claustrophobic but great if you like a lively pub with live music.

The real strength of this place is in the staff, friendly and knowledgeable about the pub as well as good for a giggle.

Dogs are welcome if well behaved and I often take my furball in with me, the staff make a huge fuss of her everytime.

The only down side is the place is now looking really battered after several years of neglect to the decor. It's long over due a like of paint and some basic repairs. And it's such a shame they have lost some popular staff members lately.

A word to the wise on wheelchair access- The bar area is accessible but their are no adapted toilets and the age of the building means level floor areas are rare. Managable but not ideal

“Oldest pub in Bolton - good beer”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2014

Went here with friends, as it was listed as oldest pub in Bolton and one of 10 oldest in England. Certainly looks old from outside and recent internet articles about a ghost. Inside it is divided into lots of different rooms. We were there on a Tuesday night when it was fairly empty and felt somewhat down market. A group of regulars around bar who you would not want to bump into on a dark night! Lots of different beers and ciders on offer, which were excellent. We did not try the food. Definitely a drinkers pub and not somewhere to take people for fancy food.
