“Not worth £40 per night”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

There is no breakfast in the rate. The internet is very sporadic. The bathroom is shared. It is a very expensive house share, with only a tv for comfort, and no kitchen facility. Smoke from other people permeates into the room.

The room is clean. The bed is comfortable. There is a desk to sit at for work or something else. The owner is welcoming and the staff are friendly. The pub is downstairs, great for a late one.

I would not stay here again unless the price was around £30 per night, hence the low 2/5. I am paying 50pn, I had to purchase mobile broadband, and go out for breakfast. So the real cost is higher making the "hotel" a more expensive stay than an average B&B in the area. There are B&B's which do give a more practical stay.

For £39 for a single room on a sunday, i was at least expecting a tv in the room. Instead i was given a very basic room with just a kettle and a single bed. I wasnt offered more pillows and the towel looked like it had just been flung on the bed. The Bathroom was shared on a completely different floor to what i was on, meaning i had to get changed in the bathroom straight after my lukewarm dribbling excuse of a shower. The lock on the bathroom door was hard to function and there was a very short amount of loo roll, which would have made things complicated if this hotel had other customers using the bathroom throughout the duration of the night. The kitchen was messy with dirty plates in the sink and the tap was in need of tightening, basically about to fall off! The bed was comfortable to a degree but very squeeky and i was kept awake throughout the night due to others bathroom trips and stomping up the creaky stairs. All in all the landlord was nice, but i didnt get a chance to complain in the morning as i had to leave early and he was nowhere to be seen. A refurb is definitely needed for this 'hotel', or a price cut. i cannot justify being charged £39 a night for such a basic room. I have started coming to basingstoke often but will not be using this hotel again. Which is such a shame as its in a great location and near to central town.

This pub is open again and under new management; friendly landlord Morgan is pulling out all the stops to make this venue 'Great' again, offering Real Ale, live music, pool, darts, pub games and various event nights. A welcoming hotel too, at very reasonable prices. Check it out!
