Description: A McMullen house since 1995, the Old Beams was rebuilt after a fire in 2007. Enjoy Seriously Relaxed Dining in this hidden country gem at the heart of Shenley Lodge. With the remnants of the historical pub abutted to the newer oak framed barn, the ingeniously reconstructed Old Beams is a glorious triumph of gastronomy over adversity! Dine inside warmed by log fires in the vaulted oak barn or private dining rooms of the old pub or, weather permitting, alfresco in the garden or on the patio. We serve glorious food with daily changing specials, tasty world wines, craft ales and world beers, credible coffee all to be enjoyed in this idyllic retreat that’s your home from home – where the chefs do all the work for you and we do the washing up!

We have eaten in the old beams multiple times and on average it has been good every time, but unfortunately this time it wasn't. We arrived about 17:30 for 8 people to have dinner, the restaurant wasn't very busy and there seemed like a lot of staff on. We put a drinks order in that took 15-20 mins to arrive, we then ordered our dinners when the drinks arrived. The dinners came out no one asked if we wanted any sauces, so we had to go find our waiter to ask for extras, and nothing arrived. Someone wanted more gravy & another person wanted mayo, they had near enough finished their dinner before it arrived. We had put another drinks order in when asking for the extras and that didn't arrive until after the meal, 20+ minutes later. There just didn't seem to be any urgency & they weren't busy enough to blame it on that.

All in all a nice restaurant, maybe just having an off day, or maybe it was due to the fact that there didn't seem to be anyone lead a group of very young waiters and waitresses .....

Food on par with a motorway service station and supermarket ready meals.... Congealed cuscus, over cooked hake and plain boiled peas. Didn't bother trying anything else.

Been here a few times over the years - but not for a while. We were shown promptly to our table and ordered drinks, had to send mine back as the tonic water had "drowned" the gin!
We had starters and mains with steaks that were cooked as requested, but at £17 no bargain.
NIGGLES: 1. nice to have complimentary hot bread with oil & balsamic dip, BUT no oil evident! 2. Slow roasted tomato garnish to steaks - hard and undercooked. 3. Chunky chips were fine, but fries on other order were not crisp = very average!
Overall service was good and staff were welcoming and helpful. BUT, certainly won't be rushing back and as others have suggested "an underwhelming experience" and not good value for money.

Visited for a family lunch, Had steak which was 17 pound plus 1.50 for sauce. So a reasonable amount and expectations were high. Ordered medium it was uncooked in places. Not terrible but certainly not value for money. Underwhelming would be a fair review. My real gripe was the drinks prices. I had a pint of lemonade with a dash of lime which fortunately I had finished by the time the bill came out I think I would probably have spat it out at the £4.70 price tag. The other meals on the 5 pound menu looked like good value so my recommendation would be go for the cheaper specials and don't have a drink as this establishment is a total rip-off for soft drinks.

Met a friend at the Old Beams today, first time experience and have to say thought it was really lovely. Nice setting, food was lovely, staff friendly .... had the BBQ pulled pork on a roll with sticky toffee pudding for pudding. Would definitely go back.
