“Amazing collection in a lovely building”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014

I was not expecting such a world class collection when friends took us to the Art Gallery in Walsall. To find so many Epsteins all together as well as a wide range of other art works in a very individual collection made by Epstein's widow, Kathleen Garman, and her friend, Sally Ryan, was a real joy. We had about an hour and I could easily have spent the whole day there. The staff were really helpful, both at the desk and at the newly opened special exhibition by Noemie Goudal which was absolutely fascinating. This was something completely different, Called 'the geometrical determination of sunrise' it involved photo montages of Brutalist structures from Europe in the section Observatoires as well as two short films, Tanker and Diver.

All of this in a beautful new gallery and for free!!

“Fantastic .... But!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2014 via mobile

Amazing building, fabulous collection, well displayed, great views from the windows which acted as picture frames of the view outside....however, we were not spoken to by anyone! Had i not visited many times before my guests would have had no idea how to wander around the galleries.... No engagment with anyone whilst inside.... The only 'gallery assistant?' I saw stood to one side engaging on their mobile with facebook! The collection is fantastic and beautifully displayed but the place felt dead! Only 6 visitors encountered in the hour we spent there! Come on Walsall you can do much better!

“A wet weather attraction”

If you're looking for something free to do with the kids, the Walsall Art Gallery is not a bad place to visit, especially as entry is free. They occasionally have some interesting exhibitions to view.

For the superb collection of Epsteins, donated by his wife. A bit minimalist, with big, barn-like spaces - austere and rather overpowering. Friendly staff.
