“Great hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2012

Stayed here with my partner, as a surprise birthday treat. The hotel was excellent. The room was excellent, warm and the bed was very comfy. I enjoyed the spa, the pool and steam room. Fantastic way to start the day. Breakfast was great. Plenty to eat and staff were friendly. Would stay agin.

Hotel nice layout with a pleasant bar. Dinner and breakfast were OK but service in bar poor as the staff stood chatting while I waited to be served. The biggest let down was the dirty bathroom with hairs on the bath and blood on the mastic. The skirting hadn't been dusted for ages and I had only one bath towel with no hand towel. It got worse as the room was really hot and just below was a Christmas party in one of the big rooms which was just below my room and the music was booming into the early hours which isn't good when you have to be up for meetings early next morning. I did pick the phone up to call reception and complain but it didn't work. Not impressed overall.

i did'nt actually stay overnight at this hotel so i am only commenting on the food on this site as we had booked a party of 16 on the 8th december 2012...the waiters and waitresses did not seem at all professional or that they knew what they were doing a bit of all over the place, Now for the food well it was actually dreadful, portions being almost a spoonful! i had chosen rocket salad with feta cheese well i think the cheese stay in the hotels fridge! the main was stuffed bell peppers with cous cous you could have easily mistaken it for a ready meal it was just tasteless and overdone plus it was a standard GREEN pepper whats a bell pepper? the roast pototoes i thought tasted like aunt bessies frozen pots together with frozrn tasteless overdone carrots and sprouts. Was telling myself its ok the pudding will be nice a vanilla gannache tartlet ...well it was a almost frozen sugary tough lump of tough pastry this was all for £32.95!!! i would never visit this hotels functions ever neither would i want to stay in a hotel of such low quality and totally over the top prices for almost inedible food!!

dreadful, dreadful dreadful never aGAIN!

Just stayed one night. Room 242 - overlooks front of hotel. Bit of noise for about 5 mins in the early hours but this was a Saturday night before Christmas so is to be expected. Lovely room, spacious and very clean. Dinner was good - blade of beef and ribeye steak both tasty. puddings and starter a bit disappointing for price. Breakfast usual buffet style - plenty to eat and of good quality. Staff very friendly. Pool area fine - had the pool and steam room to ourselves. Would stay again.

Its 2.37am and I'm still awake. Shouting , screaming been going on all night. Bar still serving very drunk people. Reception say sorry but nothing they can do. I'm here on a traing course with an exam at 9.00am here in the hotel. Can't see me doing very well in that. Wallpaper is stapled on in parts of the room, carpet dirty. Bath chipped. Food very expensive. All in all it's probably one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in.
If you don't want to sleep then it's the perfect hotel for you.
Horrific horrific horrific
Noise finally ended around 3.50am. After I threw a major strop at reception. Clearly serving drinks to non residents and very drunk people. They said they were all residents but they were getting taxis. Not a good night at all.

I wasn't sure whether to give this hotel a 3 or 4 - 3.5 would have been better.

The outside has a certain charm - from the front at least.

Reception and the restaurant and bar look very impressive. I was there for a function - function rooms were great.

Staff.
Mostly great. Some of the breakfast staff were slow - it seemed that more attention was given to getting room service orders ready from the buffet than looking after the guests that had managed to struggle down for breakfast. We sat for 30 minutes before anyone offered us toast or even a cup of tea - noone came near our table. We were just getting up to leave by the time we were offered - I remarked on this and got no sniff of an apology.
There were a couple of misunderstandings between what the function organiser asked for and what we got - but the staff dealt with it excellently and got things sorted quickly and with very little fuss.
Throughout the evening event the staff were very helpful and waited on us excellently.

Food.
Breakfast: average at best. Bacon, sausage, black pud, beans, hash browns, 2 types of egg. Bacon and eggs were good - hash browns were bad.
There was fruit etc. Didn't get offered any toast or a hot drink until I was leaving.
Lunch and dinner: I was at a function and have to say that the function food was great - really good. Dinner was nice - good buffet selection. Lunch was original and really nice.

Room.
Room looked impressive when I first went in but on a closer look is a little tired. Nice and quiet.
TV was good.
Furniture is ageing. Bed was far too soft - OK for one night but would have been an issue for longer. Wall paper was old in places and looking worse for wear. Window sill was damaged by damp. Bathroom was tired, chipped tiles, damaged skirting etc. Bath and shower were ok.
Not terrible at all - still quite nice - but starting to show its age a little.
Aircon comes on automatically at 21 degrees - but no matter how cold I turned it the room just got hotter and hotter - had to turn it off completely and was fine (the weather was below 0 outside - so I'd rather be too hot than too cold!)

Parking.
Fine - lots of space. Was not charged.

Overrall.
Despite my complaining - and for the £90 I paid (B&B) - I liked this hotel and its ambience and would stay again.

Room Tip: If you want tea and toast - ask - you may never be offered otherwise!

We stayed one night at the St Johns in November having booked for an exhibition at the NEC. We know the area well as we had lived in Solihull for 4 years in the late 80's. The St Johns is in a good central location and Solihull is a very nice town. We had booked bed & breakfast the room was nice although lacked the personal touches you would expect in a four star hotel.. We had tried to eat in a local restaurant but after waiting half an hour for a table (see our review of Jimmy Spices) decided we would go back to the hotel and eat there. The restaurant was quiet with only one large table and a couple of smaller ones occupied. We ordered drinks and perused the menu the drinks arrived after about 10 minutes. A couple of other tables were filled and their dinner orders taken, we waited about another 10 minutes and our order was taken. Twenty minutes passed with no sign of our food, we asked the waitress if she could check on it for us, she returned saying it was being plated up. We waited another 10 minutes but still no food arrived. We then spoke to the head waiter who assured us it was just coming (how long does it take to plate up a burger and chips and a piece of pork with mash). After waiting an hour from our arrival time we gave up and left the restaurant. Having had no food the evening before we were looking forward to breakfast, alas there was either an economy drive on at breakfast or the chef was as slow at breakfast time as he was the night before. The food was cold and lacking in quantity. Our recommendation if your are thinking of staying at this hotel is eat elsewhere!
