“Wonderful Location”

The Barnacre Cottages are in a beautiful spot, high above the Fylde coast, and near the town of Garstang, and as a family we enjoyed our recent stay. We did have a couple of niggles though - we booked Woodpecker Cottage because it was advertised as suitable for people of limited mobility - we were therefore surprised to find that the ground floor wet room was not adapted for disabled people, there were no grab bars in the shower, the taps were more fashionable than functional, and a plastic garden chair in the shower was not sturdy enough for purpose. Our hosts were very attentive and kind, the house is beautiful, but we would advise that future visitors be aware that the modifications for disabled people are limited. One other small thing - 5* luxury - but no soap in the bathrooms, or kitchen roll, small things that make a difference when the nearest shop is the other side of an unseasonable monsoon.

Management Response

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent weekend stay in our Woodpecker cottage.

We were obviously pleased that you found both the cottage and our location to be beautiful, that you enjoyed your stay and that you considered us to be kind and attentive hosts.

In response to the rest of your review - we are a very small family business, started originally 11 years ago so that we could work from home, enabling us to take care of our youngest daughter, now 12, who has severe learning difficulties and has spent most of the past 2 years in a wheelchair.

We know from personal experience just how important it is to choose the right place for a much needed break.

Because of this, we have a 'disabled facilities' section on our website in which we have described each of our 5* Gold cottages. From this section, guests should be able to ascertain before booking if a property is suitable. Our website and all of our advertising clearly states that 5 of our cottages have been officially inspected and classified as being Mobility 1 - 'a person is able to walk up a staircase with assistance'.

Both our Mole End and Woodpecker cottages have two ground floor en suite bedrooms. The style of these cottages have made them popular with a wide variety of guests, it is true to say, that some have been in wheelchairs and with severe disabilities.

Our Mole End cottage is described as having a 'fancy grab rail and seat' in the shower area, plus a grab rail next to the toilet. I make no mention of these items for any of our other cottages.

We did provide the high back chair and the shower chair that was asked for, I am sorry that we did not have the more specialised raised toilets seats that you later requested.

We are genuinely upset that despite our best efforts in giving detailed descriptions of our cottages, that we did not meet your expectations. We do hope that your elderly relatives did not encounter too many difficulties and that they also enjoyed their stay.

Unlike a hotel, self catering properties are not required to provide toiletries. We choose to provide a variety of items including, cleaning materials, games, books, boxes of toys, cots, highchairs, eggs from our pet chickens and vegetables and fruit from our orchard and plot when available, even rides on our daughters pony - also, liquid soap in the kitchens and cloakrooms of all our cottages. I am sorry that you were niggled that soap was not provided in the five en suite bedrooms.
Hopefully, you enjoyed the platter of freshly baked biscuits and cake.

It was unfortunate that after many weeks of fine warm weather, the day you arrived was torrential rain. Thankfully, the weekend brightened up to glorious sunshine. Unfortunately, the weather is something we cannot control.

For the future, I would encourage everyone to speak to accommodation providers prior to booking. Most of us are more than happy to chat and discuss any concerns. We will also look if it is possible to improve on what we already provide.

The property proved ideal for what was a family holiday for three generations (6 adults, 6 children, and one dog!). We travelled in three vehicles... plenty of good parking. All of us on arrival were pleasantly surprised. The cottage is fitted out to a high standard, was very clean (unlike many self-catering cottages) and provides lovely open plan living with views to the coast one way and into the woods the other.

The accommodation has been well thought through with ‘easy access’ rooms on the ground floor (double and twin) and a selection of rooms upstairs. I would agree with a previous review that the final (13th) bed single room is a small ‘box room’ really only suitable for a child, but our 14 year old son thought it was great.

This is not a working farm, but somewhere sufficiently rural to go for walks, for the children to play in the field (with play area for the younger ones, and tennis court for the older ones), but those little touches like a few hens and (given we went at April) lambs in the stable for the children to bottle feed of an evening.

The location provides something for all. You are only a few miles walking distance from the very picturesque market town of Garstang (which is also well equipped with pubs, takeaways and a Sainsburys’ supermarket) and in the other direction the beautiful Trough of Bowland; ideal for walking (or horse riding from the nearby stables as we did).

A little farther afield but still within a 30 minute drive was historic Lancaster (for the older ones) and Blackpool (for the younger ones). I would recommend the indoor water park on a ‘wet’ day. Book online the day before to save money and queuing time on arrival.

A previous review sited the noise inside and out. Yes, you can hear the M6 when sat out on the front porch, but it is not obtrusive. Inside is open plan and hard stone floors so unfortunately noise does carry but that is the fact of having the lovely open plan space. It has also been improved from previous reviews to add a large conservatory (with stone fireplace) providing more than enough seating for a large group without being on top of each other. This has been well thought out overall.

I also noticed in a previous reviews 'nit picking' review no lock on the communal bathroom. This has been fixed, and now having met Sue and Terry assume it was fixed about 5 minutes after the review was published… and probably would have been fixed whilst they were there if they had been told. They were great hosts from the moment we booked (ensuring the property was what we expected) to the moment we left.

We would definitely recommend this property to others.

“Great location for a team event!”

As a group of 9 colleagues, we rented Woodpecker and Mole End for a few days in Oct 2011. The cottages are furnished to the highest standard and the impeccable en suite facilities made it a very comfortable stay for a work event. We made full use of the very sociable open plan layout and the under floor heating/Aga meant it was so cosy. There are some lovely walks locally which were helpful for clearing the head. The friendly welcome from Terry and Sue made it all the more pleasant - Terry even helped us tow two cars out of some pretty stubborn mud - over and above service, thanks! Proximity to the unspoilt countryside, with lovely views all the way out to the coast, coupled with the array of animals Terry & Sue keep made it a very relaxing and inspirational place to be for our team event. 100% recommend.

“Fantastic stay!”
Reviewed 28 June 2011 for a stay in June 2011

We stayed in Woodpecker cottage as a party of seven, four of whom have special needs and can honestly say we had an amazing time. The accommodation was fantastic with a large open plan kitchen, dining and living area and five en-suite bedrooms which was great as everyone had their own privacy. The cottage is homely and finished to a very high standard with everything such as hairdryers, towels and cutlery provided for you.

We were given a warm welcome on arrival by the family and given a tour of the accommodation. Sue and Terry provided lots of information about the local area such as places to visit and the best places to eat which was very helpful! The cottage is ideally placed to visit Blackpool, Morecambe and the Lakes.

We all had a great time and would highly recommend Barnacre cottages!

We arrived just 2 days before Christmas with the 3 kids, 2 Aunties and 2 sets of grandparents for our 6 night stay. What a location, just off the A6 near Garstang, the cottage is on a secluded hillside with wonderfull paneramic views of Morecambe Bay to the North and Blackpool to the South. Behind is woodland that is home to some fantastic wildlife, as we opened the curtains on Christmas morning we saw 2 deer and numerous Pheasant trooting past in front of the cottage.

Sue and Terry the owners are very friendly and more than happy to help out with requests, they even ordered and took delivery of our Turkey for Christmas day! On arrival the Cottage had been seasonally decorated with wreath and real Christmas tree!

Woodpecker Cottage itself was ideal for our large family, the kids had loads of space both inside and out and the downstairs bedrooms were ideal for the grandparents as they came with walk in showers in the en-suites.

The cottage is finsihed to a very high standard and the kitchen is very well equiped for large parties such as ours including a 4 oven traditional AGA. All the bedrooms were very comfortable and the living area was terrific, finished off by a traditional wood burning stove. The dining table seated 12 of us comfortably.

I would highly recommend Woodpecker Cottage for large parties and the stay over Christmas was extra special with the location.

A great time had by all and we all look forward to returning soon.

“Perfect for big group”
Reviewed 22 November 2010 for a stay in November 2010

We stayed at Woodpecker and Partridge Cottages with a group of 19 friends and family including kiddies, babies (and our dog) to celebrate our duaghter's christening. The owners were delightful, the accommodation was perfect for a big group. There was lots of spare crockery, cutlery, glasses and chairs so we could have a great gathering in the evening. And the open plan space in Woodpecker Cottage was ideal for a group. Plus a gorgeous party of the country. Thanks to the owners!

“Another wonderful holiday at Barnacre”
Reviewed 23 October 2010 for a stay in August 2010

This must have been our sixth or seventh visit to Barnacre in the last ten years or so. We try somewhere else every now and then but haven't really find anything to rival the quality of the accommodation, the beautiful surroundings and especially the fantastic welcome that Sue and Terry provide. Nothing is ever too much trouble. For the last three or four visits we've stayed in the Woodpecker cottage. it's great because it's roomy enough for just about our whole extended family and the facilities are first class. All five double/twin rooms are en-suite which means everyone has their own privacy and it doesn't take hours to get everyone ready to go out to explore the area. The immediate surroundings are truly stunning but we find it's equally good as a base for travelling further afield. It's easy to get to the Lakes and across to Blackpool. This year we had a day in Liverpool and took ion Southport too. Even though we're regulars thee's still lots we haven't seen - so I'm sure we'll be back again soon. All in all Sue and Terry have got things really well sorted; great setting, lovely accommodation with excellent and friendly service. It really lives up to it's 5* billing.
