“Santa Express”

West Lancashire Light Railway

This short railway is a lovely place to take small children and the inside "museum" is wortha visit on it's own if you enjoy old steam trains.

Cheap (although a little more at xmas due to Santa visiting and children get a present - which is a good present and not the usual cheap rubbish)

Overall I would say this is a place that is run and cared for by staff who want to be there and this is evident in the way they welcome you and inform you about anything if you ask questions.

At Xmas you MUST book your seats!

This is a quaint little railway, hidden away in Hesketh Bank. As an exiled Prestonian, I visited last Summer, commanded by the "Trains Today" roadside signs. There's an excellent selection of steam locos. Sadly, they don't have to work very hard on the line which is on the short side. I'm not sure what opportunities there are to extend the line.
The West Lancs is popular with families who are in the know. It's a great place for young children to get up close to steam without being unduly frightened. And the ride is just long (or short) enough to engage their curiosity. On the day of my visit, there was a 1930s Ribble bus doing a free complimentary tour of the local countryside. Plenty of Car Parking, go and support this lovely little masterpiece.

This is a little hidden gem situated in the village of Hesketh Bank. It is a fantastic little light railway with genuine enthusiasts who are proud to show you around. The Santa Specials are well worth taking the kids to.

A bit off the beaten track situated alongside a builders yard. The journey has hardly started when it is over. There are many larger and better light railways around.
