We have visited now three times. The food on the first two times was excellent for the Fayre and Square quality. In fact probably the best one we have eaten at. That is until Sunday gone. We had had a lovely day out and called in on our way home as a treat. We were shown to a table and got our drinks. The lady came back and asked if we would mind moving as she had a large party and needed that table to make up a larger one. We didn't mind and she offered either a free round of drinks or free sweets to compensate for moving us. We presumed she would have altered our table number accordingly. We waited a long time and my husband went to check that they knew about the table number change - they didn't. A further wait and hybby noticed that others further back in the queue already had their food so off again to the bar to find out what has happened to our food. He was told it was just being plated. It arrived soon after. What was strange was that the peas looked different colours - very dark on one side. The chips soft and spongy. My Chicken New York was covered with bacon and cheese so difficult to know what that was like. It should have all been sent back but having never felt it necessary we started eating. My chicken was so tough I had a job cutting it, dry chips and hard peas. It had, in my opinion, been under a lamp for about 15 to 20 minutes and someone had stirred the peas to hide the fact. Needless to say one of my chicken pieces came home in my bag and if I had a dog it would have had it. chips and peas left uneaten. My hubby went for the gammon which has always been really good here but today was not succulent and was dry. His fried egg couldn't have been more solid. To be fair, the waitress did ask if everything was okay, hubby answered yes, I didn't. I explained that I thought it had been left under a lamp as the food was dried out, she asked if I wanted to speak to the chef. Not wanting to cause any problem I said no it is okay. Perhaps I should have. The food here has been very good for our previous two visits and you do get to expect the same level each time you go. I suppose that is what you get when you use these types of pub food - a lottery.
