“Great location, just a bit dated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2009

A wonderfully central location, with ample evening street parking (and a 20 car park).

It's just a bit dated, in that "cosy but dusty" english hotel way.
I had a very small single room which smelt a bit musty but was perfectly clean.

If they'd spend some money updating the place - windows that actually fit, and new carpets and curtains it would be an excellent rating, because although its a charming place, its not updated enough to be thought of as any more than average.

However - good polite service, cosy bar area, modern breakfast area, and within walking distance of Leamingtons finest eateries.

My husband, 12 year old daughter stayed here for several nights. The room we were given was too small for three people once
the very tired sofa bed was rolled out. Our solution was to obtain a second single room for our daughter- at more expense to us. This room was extremely hot due to the enormous boiler located in the store room next door which actually cut a corner off the room. This was apparent because the store room door was often left open. This would be a good room in winter! Due to the heat, we had to keep the window open for her to sleep comfortably and many insects came in.

Service was very friendly apart from the woman who seemed to be the desk manager. She was unfailingly rude and condescending.

All in all I would say that the hotel was comfortable but not awful. The parents were reasonably happy and the hot daughter was glad to get out!

This was a late booking due to being let down the week before by another hotel (shall remain nameless). This Hotel was only 10 minutes from Stoneleigh Park where we were exhibiting at the Emergency Services Show... very handy!

As it was a late booking and all other descent hotels in the area were fully booked we weren't expecting much... but were very pleasantly surprised.

The restaurant is a Counting House restaurant and if I could rate it alone it would have 5 stars.. we ate one evening meal and two breakfasts and I can honestly say that they were the best meals I've had at a hotel.

The decor downstairs is modern and has a nice feel. Upstairs was perfect clean and adequate for our needs, the rooms have a trouser press and hair dryer as standard. TV, tea and coffee all as you would expect. Optional morning paper.

The only slight let down was that the rooms were a bit too warm so we had to have the windows wide open at night.. even in November. The showers were slightly under powered and if at the front of the hotel it was a bot noisy (as you had to have the window open). But these were minor criticisms.

Will definitely stay again... Leamington Spa is very very nice! Highly recommended.

What great find!

We stayed in the Angel Hotel for a good old girls weekend of chatting, shopping and eating and it fitted the bill perfectly. The public areas are small, very clean and modern which are enhanced by extremely capeable and polite staff.

If I must complian you could say that the bedrooms are on the small side but as we just used ours to drop off the bags/get refreshed/sleep they suited us down to the ground. The rooms were clean, quiet, warm with very comfy beds.

Breakfast was a treat, freshly prepared, simple and delicious.

This place is an absolute steal if you are looking for somewhere simply to sleep. Having stayed in the Episode Hotel last year (over the road and down a bit) The Angel is a clear winner, so much so we have booked it again for next year, which has to be the best sign of customer satisfaction you can get.

While in Leamington recently I booked into the Angel as a walk in customer(no previous booking),the receptionist was a most pleasant lady, extremely efficient and friendly.I was given a well appointed comfortable room on the second floor. The room and public areas were of a high standard and extremely clean. On my way out in the evening I needed directions to my destination and was given every assistance (including a street map with my route marked on it) by another lovely lady on reception. In the morning a very good breakfast was served in the counting house restaurant by staff who also exuded the same spirit as the staff on reception.A very pleasant find, and I will return to in the future.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2008

We’ve stayed at the Angel five or six times now, with rooms varying from luxurious to fairly tired. But they’ve always been quiet, so the room we were given this time turned out to be a bit of a nasty shock. It was on the first floor just above the bar, and pounding pop music started early Wednesday evening. The staff were happy to turn it off when we asked, since the bar was actually empty (though we were still worried about potential noise at the weekend), but much worse was the fact that the ceiling seemed to be paper thin – when the people overhead were in their room you could hear every footstep, also the plumbing, and since they got up at 6.30am this was a big problem. The room was also fairly small, a bit claustrophobic, with a tiny wall-mounted television. Only a shower in the bathroom.

I’ve never asked to change rooms in a hotel before and thought it might be embarrassing, but the very nice receptionist(s) said it wouldn’t be a problem. So after two nights we moved to a really nice room, freshly painted and with a flat-screen television and, best of all, no noise at all. It was much larger and lighter, with a sofa and a bath. With one of the three windows overlooking his precious car in the car park, partner was in hotel heaven. We started to feel so much happier and relaxed.

Breakfast was nice, and the hotel staff all friendly. I got the impression they had gone out of their way to move us to a room they felt we would be happier in. It is good to think
that they think part of their job is to keep people happy and returning (unlike our experience at the Royal Hotel in Ashby!, where they seemed much more interested in their wedding/birthday functions).

We will definitely be coming back, as long as we keep an eye on the room we are given.

We stayed at The Angel Hotel for a single night in mid-April 2008. We arrived early as we were told when booking that the hotel was hosting a wedding reception on Saturday, so parking could be a problem. We managed to grab the one remaining space!

Because we were so early, we didn’t expect the room to be ready, but was told by the friendly receptionist that as nobody had used the room the night before, we could check in. We were given one of the three rooms (18-20) in the small separate block outside, right opposite the reception sliding doors.

It was clear that this section of the hotel had very recently been refitted, as there was a lovely smell of “newness” about it, and the room itself smelt very fresh and clean, with new carpets and bathroom suite. Very nice, powerful shower, and all spotless. More about the room later!

Bags unpacked, we went to find a nice hearty breakfast in the main shopping area, and we can highly recommend Café Rouge for one of the best breakfasts in town – with superb friendly service to match. I would guess that eating there at night would be just as good.

We had pre-booked an evening meal in the hotel, and on checking out the menu, we found a great choice and enough to suit even the fussiest of eaters I would imagine – including my wife!

Before dinner, we went to the hotel bar. We didn’t think this area matched the other nicer parts of the hotel, having a bit of a “pub” feel to it rather than a hotel bar. Also, avoid the Fosters lager at all costs – it is as flat as if it were poured the day before! Shame, and not cheap either at £3.00 a pint. Also, considering there was a wedding reception being held, the bar was woefully understaffed, with long waits before getting served – the barman just wasn’t there most of the time! There are some much nicer places to drink in Leamington itself.

I also just want to point out that although 99.9% of that terribly scathing review of the hotel posted elsewhere was wrong, the toilets in the reception area do indeed have a very unpleasant smell and feel to them. Again, more pub-like than hotel standard, and this could do with being addressed.

There was an RAF Squadron dinner in the restaurant in the evening, and we were concerned that, apart from four others, because we were not part of the RAF dinner we would be somewhat forgotten during our meal. We were very wrong. The service was exceptional, as was the food, and they coped extremely well with having to serve so much food all at the same time. At £20 a head for a three course meal, you would struggle to find nicer food in Leamington – certainly at the value and service offered by the hotel. There is a lovely conservatory to sit in before and after the meal, and as we enjoyed our coffee, we listened to the speeches and entertaining quiz for the RAF dinner!

Unfortunately though, we had a terrible nights sleep. The hotel has a very convenient location, and this of course means it sits on a very busy road, and our room was literally just a pavement away from Regent Street. Cars, lorries, police sirens and people all made for a disturbed night. Also, the door to our room was a terrible fit, and every time the main external door automatically slammed shut, the door to our room shook! Just a polite note to anybody who stays in this block - please pull the external door shut manually, slowly and quietly!

Also, we had possibly the worse mattress we have ever had the displeasure to sleep on! It was either deliberately soft, or very, very old. My wife suffers greatly from back pain, and by the morning she could hardly walk, and it meant we had to cut short our Sunday and head off home early, such was her discomfort. Perhaps we should have made a special request for a firm mattress, but this really was far too soft.

However, before we left we enjoyed an excellent breakfast, with a wide choice of food – some healthy, some not so healthy!

All in all, if you make sure you ask for a quiet room and are not bothered by soft mattresses (or ask for a hard one), then we can fully recommend The Angel Hotel for a pleasant stay. Central to the shopping and wonderful gardens of Royal Leamington Spa, it is clean and friendly with efficient staff.
