It’s difficult to believe The Ashton is a B&B as it feels more like a small, luxury hotel. Beautifully designed with attention to detail that is difficult to beat, we were extremely comfortable in our large room. Conveniently located within easy walking distance of the historic city centre of Lancaster.
On arrival, we were welcomed with a delicious and generous slice of James’ home-made cake. Breakfast was equally scrumptious including a good selection of James’ home-made breads, muffins, preserves and compotes.
We regretted not arranging to have dinner while we were there.

I was there for a birthday visit with my student daughter and treated myself to a 'grand' room. The house and setting are calming and sweet (the -very- free range hens were gorgeous). The interior decoration is fab - I am in love with the dining room sideboard/mirror combo - and the colours are brill. My room was fit for my princess pretentions and I loved it (Alice loved the sweeties). Hosts were very attentive - even to a total luddite who was unable to work the tv - willing to tramp upstairs and at least pretend to be happy about it. The place was very quiet in the night which is really important to me and breakfast was lovely. I just wish I'd known about it before - and am upset that Alice leaves uni this year which gives me far fewer opportunities to visit. Let's hope it's not full for graduation?

So glad you enjoyed The Ashton and its surroundings, it really is a little haven in historical Lancaster! I'm glad Alice enjoyed the sweets too, they're proving to be a very popular treat and have been wrapping up more little packages every week!

The hens aren't laying too well in the cold unfortunately, but hopefully they'll get us through the window.

Graduation fills up very quickly when the dates get published so I would book up quick for that one; Two universities and only one Ashton usually equals a very busy time! Hope to see you for graduation and celebrating Alice's First degree (fingers crossed).

The Ashton is a stunning place where the attention to detail second to none. James is the most amazing host and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed for two nights and it was fantastic. The ambience and decor is amazing and a credit to James. You wouldn't get a better welcome and service in any 5* hotel!
Breakfast was delicious with home made bread and the most fantastic eggs benedict ever! (beautiful eggs from "the girls"!)
Coffee and home made cake served each day and nothing was too much trouble.
Thank you James. You're a star!

Hi Mike,

It's great to know that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay at The Ashton and that we surpassed your expectations, even of a five star hotel!

Though, 'the girls' aren't enjoying the cold weather too much at the moment are seem to be reluctant to lay! Still on hen-related news, we've added two new ex-battery breds to the mix so they're enjoying roaming around the gardens and seems they're settling in nicely.

Might get a chance to sample their eggs on your next visit!

Our online booking hadn't got through to James, but that wasn't a problem. He poured us a glass of wine and immediately upgraded us to a very spacious and luxurious room. The house is most impressive, and has been meticulously renovated and decorated by James. When he was unable to get us into his recommended restaurant he offered to cook dinner for us. We were delighted to "eat in", and enjoyed a beautiful meal in the Ashton House dining room. (Sourced from a Bill Grainger cook book). Breakfast next morning was also excellent. The decor throughout and garden setting complete with ducks and hens made this a truly memorable stay, and we were sorry it was only one night!

As surprise birthday presents go, being whisked off to The Aston must be one of the best. I was lucky enough to be taken here by my partner, and between him and the owner James everything was perfect!
On arrival at the house (I don't want to say B&B as it makes it sound shabby....and this was far from it. It was pure luxury!) we were greeted by James with and an offer of freshly made cake and tea...what a lovely welcome.

We were then shown to our room which was stunning....lovely furniture, and nice touches with the BOSE docking station and flatscreen TV, both of which were helpful additions to the room but they didn’t over power the sumptuous décor surrounding them. The bathroom was stunning, huge bath that I could have stayed in for days (which filled up surprisingly quickly if, like me you are easily distracted by the lovely books around the room and looking out the window at the ducks roaming around!). The shower with it’s lovely rain head was great for a refreshing shower, and the REN toiletries were a nice touch…and smelled divine.

I’d been booked a massage, something that can be arranged with James prior to arrival and it was lovely, the therapist really knew what she was doing and it was such a nice way to relax. The treatment room had everything you’d need and it was a nice touch with it being onsite rather than having to travel to a salon in town.

Breakfast the next morning was great, with a good selection of choices both hot and cold choices….the only hard part was picking what you wanted from the great selection of local produce.

I’m slightly loathe to write this review, as I don’t want too many people to find this lovely hideaway and for it to become over run with screaming kids and moaning people….but then I don’t think James would ever let anything bad happen to the place!

If you want something special and a little bit off the beaten track, with superb furnishings and décor but with a hit of old fashioned service and the knowledge that nothing will ever be too hard to arrange for you then head for The Ashton, a little bit of luxury in the Lancashire countryside.

So happy to know you enjoyed your surprise getaway for your birthday!

Thanks so much for your feedback, especially in reference to Paula, she'll be thrilled to know that you enjoyed your massage.

The ducks are still roaming around the gardens, difficult to get them to bed, even on the long winter nights, they almost blend in with the snow outside - hard work to find them but at least they look pretty!

Hope to see you again soon!

James

My husband and I love Lancaster and he stumbled across The Ashton recently and booked a night for our anniversary. What an easy way to earn brownie points! Every little touch from the grounds to the refreshments, has been carefully considered. We were greeted with freshly homemade cream cake and a pot of loose leaf tea, the room was beautifully finished to a high standard with thoughtful touches (refreshments, books, cosmetics). James has given this beautiful old building a new lease of life and hasn't cut corners anywhere. He is a master of interior design, cookery (fab full english) and hospitality in general. Feels like a luxurious, well-kept secret, just wish we'd stayed another night.

Thanks for your kind words Jonny!

My interior design skills may take a battering in the run up to Christmas, sorting out decorations and the all important tree!

Glad you enjoyed the breakfast, seems to be a favourite amongst all our guests - happy to know you enjoyed it and your stay in general!

We stayed just the one night at The Ashton but wished for longer. The decor is modern boutique but in keeping with the building. The bedroom was stunning in all ways, from the decor, to the en suite shower room with under floor heating plus some very nice quality shampoos and shower gels etc. It is also really nice to have fresh milk to make hot drinks with in the room.
Located off the motorway, it was far enough away but for a great nights sleep.
James provided us with a tasty spread for supper in the evening, and the breakfast was superb. All in all, an excellent stay and would not hesitate to recommend to others or go back ourselves in the future.
