“GOOD EXPERIENCE”

Drawn to this pub, whilst staying across the road, by the number of people sitting outside.Friendly welcome, good pub food, good beer, a very enjoyable experience.

“A truly English pub”

Excellent food, friendly service (though a bit slow), and good cider on the tap. Well worth the visit.

“Can't fault this pub/restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2014

Finally, on our fourth trip to Lancaster - staying at The Royal Kings Arms, directly opposite - we managed to try "Merchants". So glad we did. We had 3 separate visits - once for a much needed afternoon thirst quencher, once for lunch and once for dinner. Spot on every time. The beers are excellent (my husband only tried the local breweries' offerings and he was well pleased), the wines good and the white well chilled, the food and service excellent. Can recommend the fish and chips and burger and chips. I am known as "very difficult" when it comes to eating out but I had no problems with this place. Well recommended.

“Good service, good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2014

A pub with atmosphere, and a beer garden. The bar serves some very good choice of fine ales and the food is served quickly. Sunday lunch was very good - the beef actually was 'real' beef, and the wild boar steak on sweet potato mash was lovely. Well worth the visit.

“Disgusting service, would recommend getting new staff!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

Called in advance of our visit to make a booking for seating, as a few in our group would need it. Told very politely over the phone to see what was available on the day. When we arrived at the empty establishment a very pretentious, little man, behind the bar (who was apparently in charge) rudely told us that "groups" are not allowed. What a shame, such a lovely place of history could be ruined by the people within it. Thankfully the high quality venues such as The Borough, The Sun and The Water Witch had no issue accomadating us, with excellent surroundings 'and service'.
