Originally a wine cellar, so there are 3 arched dining areas, with soft lighting, soft music and perfectly placed tables and chairs. Waiting staff are happy, welcoming and they produce fabulous food at very reasonable prices. Bottle wine, dinner for 2 £25!!! Wonderful!!!

We chanced upon this wonderful pub/restaurant just because there was shelter outside from the rain, (we could have gone back to the hotel we had booked across the road but chose not to - but that's another review). The Merchants' building looks as though its underground and the rooms inside are arched with curved ceilings. It was originally a wine merchants place and the atmosphere reflects a unique charm. An atmosphere of togetherness prevailed as people around the other tables struck up conversation with us when they heard we were strangers far away from home. Nearly everyone spoke highly of the food and so we selected the recommended pie. All the meals seemed to be pie with this that or the other. Boy the pies were huge, my wife couldn't eat all hers it was too big! I left nothing! The price was ridiculously cheap - and the service friendly and efficient, no wonder the place was full.
Many real ales were served and I received good advice from the knowledgeable chaps behind the bar. We would go there again and again.

Drawn to this pub, whilst staying across the road, by the number of people sitting outside.Friendly welcome, good pub food, good beer, a very enjoyable experience.
