My partner and I visited the hotel on the 16th January to attend a dinner dance that had been arranged by our local rowing club, a large annual event which we always look forward to. I have always wished to leave my feedback when visiting the hotel, as I know through talking to a friend of mine that works at this hotel; it is always appreciated, however this is the first time I have found time to leave some detailed feedback.
We arrived at the hotel at approximately 13:00/13:30, with the intention to have a spot of lunch before checking in to our room. With this being the first time with have dined in the hotels bar lounge for lunch, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. The hotel was very busy on this particular afternoon, however the staff working in bar lounge were very welcoming, and although we had to wait a short time for a table, we were not ignored and as soon as a table became available we were directed to it immediately. The menu on offer was quite extensive and looked very appetising, and again whilst the hotel was very busy, our order was taken quickly and our food didn’t take long to arrive.
The lunch was fantastic and I thought represented very good value for money, the whole meal was obviously made fresh on the premises, and both my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. We decided at this point to take a walk round the grounds to allow our lunch to settle. The hotel is set in fantastically landscaped grounds, with fountains and streams following through their beautiful gardens.
We then proceeded to the hotel reception to check in, and at this point felt slightly disappointed, the receptionist didn’t come across as welcoming and we felt rushed through the whole check in procedure. I had to ask the receptionist about breakfast times for the following morning as this information wasn’t given, and I was also ‘sighed at’ when I enquired about the possibility of a late checkout (an option which we didn’t eventually take as we were made to feel like it was too much trouble). We were however offered assistance with our luggage, which was a slightly redeeming feature.
After this disappointing start to our overnight stay, we then went to our bedroom, which I have to say, was fantastic! The room was very well furnished with a large bed, large bathroom with walk in shower and a large bath tub. The room was so clean and warm, one of the most impressive I have ever stayed in.
So after a relaxing late afternoon and a lovely soak in tub, we donned our finery and made our way to the banqueting suite to meet up with friends for a very much enjoyed three course meal. The food was very enjoyable and was nice and hot (the soufflé was to die for!!). However, I only wish I could give such high praise for the food service, it was quite obvious the young girl that was serving our table was very inexperienced, at times it was very apparent that she did not have a clue. Also the delivery of the food was almost robotic, the waiting staff lacking personality and also knowledge of the food they were serving. Whilst I can appreciate that feeding around 250 people can be quite tricky, a little more time should be taken to make the customer feel that little bit more special, especially at a 4 star ‘premier’ hotel.
However, the above was without doubt the only point that marred the evening, the cabaret act that was put on by the hotel was very entertaining and the hotel’s DJ played a fantastically varied selection of music that kept the dance floor filled all evening. Back on the subject of staff, the managerial staff on the evening were all very pleasant indeed and were all too happy to assist the staff in looking after us throughout the meal.
I must also give a special mention to the hotels wine waiters, drinks waiters and bar staff on the evening. We ordered our table wine in advance over the bar whilst having pre dinner drinks; the wine was on our table before we sat down, was well chilled in a nice ice bucket and as we sat down for dinner, a young man offered to pour our wine for us. We were then approached several times during the meal to check if any more wine or drinks were required. Even later in the evening, whilst ordering drinks from the bar, the bar tenders were all very pleasant all the way through to closing at 2:00am and combine the manners and politeness you would expect of a 4 star hotel with a friendly wit and playful banter that any customer would appreciate. They were all exceptionally efficient, professional, well organised and were a class above the food service staff on the evening, a true credit to the hotel and the bars manager.
We retired to our bedroom at around 2:00am once the dancing had finished and had a brilliant night of undisturbed sleep. In the morning we used the hotel restaurant for breakfast, the breakfast selection is very good and is prepared using products that are sourced locally which was a nice touch. The breakfast staff were all so friendly and professional and we received excellent service, which was really good to see after the disappointing food service from the night before.
All in all, the Mount Pleasant Hotel is a fantastic venue and despite the couple of complaints that we had during our visit, we still had a very enjoyable time and are even considering returning in the next month or so, to sample the restaurant evening menu which comes very highly recommended!
We hope our comments are appreciated and we very much look forward to returning again soon.
