“BIRTHDAY DINNER WITH FRIENDS”
Reviewed 8 March 2013

Fab Art Deco hotel - but the food did not live up to expectations. Two members of the party had to return steaks as they were not cooked as per request. My chicken was the driest and tasteless I have ever had and no vegetables arrived until requested Mints came half an hour after the coffee. The staff were pleasant and perhaps it was just an off night which can happen at any establishment.

Stayed at hotel, for a funeral. Most stunning decor, even if you dont like art deco you just have to be amazed. Most lovely staff, really understanding and kind towards us. Had a executive room on ground floor, very quiet and and 2 excellent nights sleep. Car park small, but managed to park each night, car would probably be safe outside car park on quiet road. would stay again.

Room Tip: choose a executive room.

Stayed overnight and had supper and breakfast, the place is beautifully recreated to art deco style, the ballroom looks amazing at night , bar prices for drinks were surprisingly reasonable and the breakfast was nice, although my co diner had the full English breakfast parts of it were cold which was disappointing.
The room was clean and well presented and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly

Room Tip: second floor rooms quieter

A group of us had lunch here after our meeting - the Art Deco décor is very impressive. As a vegetarian I was a little sceptical about the options on offer, but apart from the veggie ravioli on the menu turning out to be cannelloni I couldn't fault the food at all - it was hot, very tasty and the presentation was excellent (which is half the battle in any restaurant!) The icecream desert was also a delightful surprise - three scoops: vanilla, strawberry and chocolate which had a lovely hand made texture (not smooth factory-made slush which melts far too quickly). The chocolate flavour had little chocolate chips in it and the strawberry little fragments of fruit - delicious. All in all an excellent lunch experience and I will certainly be going back to this restaurant in future.

Great night... Guinea pig night where the chef chooses what you eat, nine ladies had a great meal, you don't chose he decides what he is cooking for the night. Great surroundings, great meal. Good value for money. Would go again.....

As noted by the previous reviewer the outside is bland and suggests an old tired hotel. However, inside the hotel has undergone a partial refurbishment. The main areas have been renovated in an Art Deco style. The bedroom was renovated in a modern style with flat screen TV, coffee and tea, an iron toiletries but no hairdryer (they may provide them at reception but I had brought my own). The problems with the room were no fridge or safe, no light (if you are staying here on business bring a table lamp!) and a very noisy air conditioning unit. Whilst we were warm everyone else complained their rooms were cold.

The toilets near the ballroom were freezing cold and had not been refurbished - this lets the overall feel of the hotel down.

Breakfast was nice and very well presented. All the staff were friendly.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel.

Craig S, Manager at The Earl of Doncaster, responded to this review, 22 January 2013
Dear Guest,

Thank you for an honest appraisal of your experience at our Beautiful Art Deco Hotel.

You are correct, hairdryers are available upon request as we found many were missing in our daily room audits. We are more than happy to provide them and bring them directly to the bedroom to avoid guests making the trip to Reception.

The Hotel has had several millions of pounds spent in recent years developing the new 40 bedroom section in addition to the Restaurant, Reception and Ballroom. Work has now begun on redeveloping our Lounge Bar, all in Art Deco style.

We have noted your comment about the lack of light. We do provide table lamps in addition to soft bedside lighting in all of our rooms so we hope to correct this issue in our room audit.

I have informed the maintenance team regarding the air con unit. This should only offer a slight background noise rather than a 'noisy' distracting hum. I have stayed in the hotel on many occasions and am yet to encounter this.

Your review is appreciated and we will endeavour to improve.

Kind Regards,

Craig Shepherd
