A slight detour off the A1(M) was well worth the effort.

Being able to sit on the decking overlooking the River Idle and an old bridge was a bonus for lunch as the weather before and after lunch was a tad wet!

A "light bite" haddock was ordered for one of our party and a "normal" sized haddock for another. I'd love the know the size of the large haddock as my light bite was more than adequate and the normal enough to share! One slight criticism would be that the chips could've done with a bit more cooking.

Liver and bacon (excellent) served in a giant Yorkshire Pud (bit stodgey) and a beef and onion baguette (bit dry) were had by others in our party. Had these aspects been better an "excellent" overall rating would have been given.

The regular beer, Batemans XB was superb and Thatchers excellent Gold cider also on tap. The "dangerous" Thatchers Katy being available in bottle. Unfortunately continuation of the road trip was required otherwise a longer stay would've been enjoyed.

The Haxey Gate is actually nearer Misterton in Nottinghamshire rather than Doncaster in South Yorkshire but has a Doncaster post code.

We just looked in for a drink by the River Idle. There were a lot of people about mostly sampling the carvery as it was Sunday afternoon. We just had a couple of drinks on the terrace watching the river. Added bonus was the Vulcan bomber that came over low just as we were leaving. We were told it puts in an appearance quite often. The Haxey Gate Inn has motel style accommodation and a large carpark that is badly in need of some organisation at the moment. Okay place with decking down by the river which is securely fenced off.

We dropped in for a meal as our usuall eating place was having a refit. Wish we had never bothered. Not particularly friendly and for the food expensive and not good frozen tasteless chips with over cooked scampi and peas that would feed all the pub. At nearly 20 pound for two a visit we will not be repeating.

Been coming here for some time now, it serves the best carvery we have ever had, and does it consistantly week in. Having been on other nights throughout the week and eaten from the menu we can highly recommend the Haxey gate as a place to eat. It should also be mentioned that the beer is excellent.

What a fabulous friendly and welcoming inn. We had a lovely family day watching the boat races up the river, bouncy castle and face painting for the little ones. Lovely bar, great views and real ales. Worth the trip and will call in again
