We waited over an hour to receive under cooked chicken. The excuse was that there had beeen an excessive number of take aways. We were palmed off with the offer of extra drinks bu all we wanted to do was have a simple meal

“Best curry in 30 years!”
Reviewed 3 August 2009

My wife and I ate at The Maharajah on a recent weekend break in Chipping Campden. Very different to find an indian restaurant in such a setting - at the back of a traditional English Pub - but easy access to proper beer was a welcome addition to normal indian fare.
Overall this was the best curry I've ever eaten - flavours were well-balanced and very fresh with liberal, well-balanced use of fresh herbs and spring onions as garnishes and outstanding naan breads. The menu featured some old favourites and also a good range of dishes that were different from the standard offerings. The 'Spicy Lamb' starter is heartily recommended

“Great curry selections”
Reviewed 15 June 2009

We had dinner at the Maharaja Restaurant which is located in the Volunteer Inn prior to beginning the Cotswold Way long distance walk. We both ordered the Coriander Curry as recommended by the server and found it to be some of the best curry we have had. The plain Naan bread was also very good, large quantity.

“Excellent Indian Restaurant in the heart of picture postcard England”
Reviewed 8 September 2008

As best man at a recent wedding, I arranged an ushers dinner for my groom the night before his wedding. I have to say I was a little surprised to find an Indian restaurant not only within a typical country pub but in one of the most quintessentially English places in the country.

All I can say that it was superb. The food was lovely. A huge range of starters and mains, with fantastic naan breads. Superb value for money. We had a two hour meal for 10 of us including starters, drinks, three different curries and naans for around £20 per head.

Service was excellent. They could not have been more attentive.

I highly recommend The Volunteer Inn. With curry fast becoming the most popular dish on the menu for most English families, there is no reason why a traditional English village should not provide an excellent Indian restaurant. The fact you can also wash it down with a good old pint of ale is a bonus!!!
